September 27, 2005 at 2:19 amWe are using a KONA 2 card in a Dual 2.7 Mac running OS X 10.4 and FCP HD 5
We shoot all of our video in DVCPro HD with a Panasonic Varicam set to 720p 60 fps 59.94 hz NDF… We are then using the HDSDI output with embedded audio from a Panasonic 1200A Deck connected to your KONA 2 card to input for capture.
We have been using the KONA2 720p 59.54 DVCPro HD preset in FCP, and we have noticed that we are experiencing an Capture problem.
When we used RS 422 Control,Using the -

September 27, 2005 at 6:30 amI have been using the 720P preset at 59.94 capture and sequence easy set-up for Varicam multiframe rate capture (4, 6, 8, 48, 60fps), then using the 23.98 sequence preset for the FRC data rate converter converted clips on over 4 hours of footage (over 300 clips) using HD/SDI inout and have not had a single glitch so far. As a matter of fact the Varicam various frame rates look awesome when converted to full on HD! I am using the new Kona LH and not the Kona 2 however.

Are you using the DVCPro HD codec or the 720p uncompressed codec? This issue appears with 8bit or 10bit 720p captures, not DVCPro HD.
Also, note Gary Adcock’s note that QT 7.0.1 will fix the issue with uncompressed captures, but QT 7.0.2 breaks it again.

September 27, 2005 at 1:25 pmReading all of these posts it sounds like this is a KONA driver issue. Do we know if this issue exist with a decklink product. That would be one easy way to figure out if it is the way FCP is handling 720P HD footage and how that interacts with drivers, codecs etc.
It can not be a simple system thing because to many people are experiencing the same thing. I’d try the decklink forum to see if the problem exists there. Then we will know that it is FCP. If not it will have to be resolved in the driver.

September 27, 2005 at 3:34 pmOk, I’ve got my 1200A deck back and here’s what I got on a test:
FCP 5.0.2 / QT 7.0.1
Capture Preset: 720p 8bit Uncompressed
Captured one clip and it shows up with the subclip error as described in the original post.Capture Preset: 1080i 8bit Uncompressed (I switched the 1200A to cross-convert to 1080i)
Captured the same clip perfectly.FCP 5.0.2 / QT 7.0.2 (Updated Quicktime on the same machine)
Same results as above. So the issue is 100% a 720p Uncompressed issue. If you capture in any other format, you will not experience the subclip error. Also, this only applies to clips which are captured using Capture Clip or Batch Capture. If you perform a “Capture Now” it’s fine, so that’s what I’m doing when I need to use uncompressed.
So this issue has not been addressed at all in any update of Quicktime to date. Really a perplexing issue and I don’t really care who’s to blame, it just need to be addressed so we can work in 720p uncompressed again.

this was reported to apple as a 7.0 and now a 7.02 bug.it was fixed in the 7.01 version and rebroke in 7.02”
Nope, it’s broken in 7.0.1 as well. I just posted test results below, but the bug was not fixed in 7.0.1.

October 3, 2005 at 7:27 pmYes, this is an issue with decklink HD. I have seen it on both our Kona2 cards and our Decklink. Happens with both Panasonic 1200a and the 150. I think it is a 720P 8 and 10 bit problem. Dosen’t seem to come up in HDV or 1080i. It dosen’t seem like a critical issue to ANY of the manufacturers as the quick fix is to delete the clip from the bin and re-import it. Does slow up the workflow though.

October 11, 2005 at 4:55 pmI have been folowing this post because we are experiencing a similar problem since we upgraded to FCP Studio, Tiger, and capturing with the KONA 2… 720p over the HD-SDI from a Panisonic 1200 deck.
I haven’t seen any posts recently related to this… This problem is driving us crazy, the work around of re-importing the clips from the capture scratch works, but is far too inconvienient. And, Capture Now works fine, but requires constant babysitting!
Just wondering if anyone has found a solution to this yet. We have called AJA, who told us that they are aware of the problem, but aren’t sure that is the problem is with their software… I have also contacted Apple, but have yet to hear anything back!!
So… I’m just watching the posts to see if anyone else finds a solution.

We know, we know,
but it is a QT problem and until there is a new release of QT 7 we are stuck. (and you wonder why no one at apple will call you back)Careful on “Capture Now” if you plan on going back to finish on other systems! The logging info is not captured
and often FCP screws with the timecode.Gary Adcock
