  • Do you have a screenshot of what you’re trying to achieve? It’s a bit unclear for me. The garbage matte has been replaced by masks and in most cases you can just keyframe a mask on the opacity parameter to achieve the previous effect.

Can you ask your network contact for a visual aid? I’m working with a network now and they sent a 1920×1080 PNG that shows the text safe areas and where the bugs will be.

Some good ideas already posted, but you could also use the text tool and just make them guide layers so they don’t export out.

What do you mean about keeping the Project File size down? These files are typically in the low MBs, so I don’t think that should be an issue. Dynamic linking Neat Video comps from AE to PP sounds like a nightmare. Dynamic Link can already be finicky and slow without adding noise reduction to the mix.

I personally like to use Neat Video in Premiere where most of the video editing takes place. After Effects already has decent grain reduction included, and if Neat Video is needed in AE, I just apply the effect in Premiere and export a lossless clip for use in AE. Then it is pre-rendered as well and I can work at full-res with AE trying to compute every frame of noise reduction.

  • What look are you going for? Is it supposed to be realistic or more of a motion graphic?

The Extract effect has replaced Luma Key in After Effects. Use this effect to key out the lighter background. You will need to add an inverted mask to the effect around her face so the lighter areas of her skin/eyes aren’t also keyed out. Fortunately she is wearing dark clothes and has long dark hair all around, though that shine on top of her head may be a little tricky.

You could try this free script. I’m just not sure if scaling up the Element 3D solid will change the size of your model, but it’s worth a shot.

  • Great!

  • Could be a frame rate issue, or it just needs to be rendered before playback. What file format is it?

    Hmm… A few thoughts:

    – Are the photos RAW as well? If you shut the photo layers off does it play smoothly?
    – Have you used AE 2017 before and had it work fine? I haven’t used it yet, but heard it can be quite buggy.
    – In your preview window, is the frame rate set correctly and the Skip parameter at 0?

I’m not entirely convinced After Effects is behaving incorrectly. Templates often use expressions and effects that are processor-intensive. Combine that with the large photos and I think it is possible that After Effects just can’t handle realtime playback of this project on your computers, even after rendering a preview.

Hopefully some of this is helpful!
