There is a plugin that uses tiffs or jpegs as transitions, I think it’s from Noise Industries, but I can’t remember the name of it. Will report back if my memory kicks in.
The greyscale maps David talks about were mostly used as softwipe or gradient transitions.

Your deck only has HDMI out, so you need a way to get your canvas to the deck, you could try doing that via FireWire. But you could use a DVI to HDMI converter and go straight to the monitor, but still, your color will not be true. You could look at the MXO, you can calibrate with that.

Open your clips in Quickime Pro, and copy and paste the bits you want into new QT players, save as, name and go.
I do this all the time for small bits in a timeline that need smoothcam, saves a huge amount of time.

One darn good and inexpensive solution is the Nattress G Film plugins. They give you all the control over grain, dust and scratches, bleach bypass, everything. Very easy to use.

Hey Tom,
I run Motion on a 2.4 ghz MBP and it works okay, but I also have 4 gigs of RAM, which I think helps. Mostly I use it for time remapping, as Optical flow is just so good, but it also puts huge files in the Motion library, which need to be cleaned out after you render your project.
I must say though, after a considerable retiming project it takes a while to get back to normal. It just kind of pauses to catch up or something.

Nowhere in your original post did you mention the possibility of re-rendering your movie with an alpha channel. The advice to do this is the normal way it’s done and you got a good description. The thoughts I left you are ways to use the file you have.
