It seems like it would be very basic–but I’ve imported TIFF images and while playing them in the timeline, they go softer when I hit play and sharpen back up when I hit stop…is this how it will be when I export? What can I do to fix this? Please help me!!! It’s urgent.

Are they rendered and are you looking on an external monitor?

If not then please do and report back.

Let me guess, you are working in a DV timeline? Graphics will always look bad in those.

    Have a wonderful day.

    [Chris Poisson] “Let me guess”

    No, I wanna guess.

It’s the realtime settings dropping the quality down while playing and them sharpening back up when stopped.

    DR,

Do you remember which version of FCP introduced this realtime anomoly?

    Have a wonderful day.

[Chris Poisson] “which version of FCP introduced this realtime anomoly?”

It’s not really an anomoly, it’s how RT is supposed to work. RT playback is by default set to drop display resolution when playing back material that exceeds the RT capabilities of your hardware setup. Because you use SATA drives with your desktop computers and have a fast laptop as well, you most likely don’t bump up against the throughput overhead that causes RT to drop, or you only see it when stuff isn’t yet rendered.
