  • Use the camera to convert HDV to DV?

Posted by Brock Fisher on November 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm

I use 3 Sony Z1Us to capture dance performances. I video in HDV and use the cameras to convert to DV (via iLink) when importing into FCP 6.04.

I read that camera hardware conversion on import produces a lower quality file than if imported into FCP directly as HDV and then converted using Compressor to DV.

I output to DVD. Someday I may want to output some of these dances to HD disks. That is why I use HDV.

Is there any evidence that the conversion from HDV to DV via the camera is poorer quality using a software conversion like Compressor?

    Thank you for any advice.

I have never heard that and I’ve done it both ways and can’t tell the difference.

    Have a wonderful day.

I don’t think you will notice much difference in picture but text may be an issue. Text in a DV sequence that is then converted to mpeg for DVD is likely to loose quality.

Strictly speaking staying in HDV and then going straight to SD mpeg for DVD is one less transcoding of your pictures and should look better, but in real world, I doubt that the difference is obvious.
