I did this intro idea a few years ago, you may see how in either of the “Novalash” videos on my web site samples. Like Terry said, you need to use a still photo; or another idea would be to use an HD video in a SD project.

use a bitrate calc to determine the right file size, then render your mpg2 in Vegas. Don’t use optimize in DVDA as DSE said.

i went from vegas 6 to vegas 8, and found v8 doesn’t like two things. very high res stills, and video tracks with nothing on them.

Also, check the “Output” options in your camera.

John could not have said it better. Put a Hollywood widescreen DVD in the player and see if it crops or pan/scan’s it, then you know for sure.
