For years I’ve captured video to Vegas (currently use V7) from my old Panasonic NV-MX7 using a firewire DV cable (which I also bought years ago).
Just got a nice new Canon HV30 HDV but capture just won’t work for me. I’m using the same old firewire cable but Vegas capture screen doesn’t recognise any device connected. If I switch back to my Panasonic, capture works.
Appreciate any thoughts as to why this might be so. Has firewire technology changed? Do I need upgrade to Canon’s recommended optional DV cable or should I be looking at my camera settings for a solution.
I appreciate that Vegas Pro 8 is a HD product but I would have thought that Vegas 7 should at least capture HD even if the final product is in SD standard.

There is a new capture utility for HDV in Vegas 7. The DV Vidcap program won’t work (as you have seen). When you go to capture, Vegas should give you a choice of capturing HDV or DV before either capture program starts (actually the HDV one is built-in and will be a dockable window)

If you don’t get asked to choose, you make have selected DV as the default in the past and asked Vegas to stop asking you. Go to Options | Preferences | Video and uncheck Use external video capture application . This is should return to asking you whether to capture DV or HDV again. Then select HDV to capture from your HDV camera.

Also, check the “Output” options in your camera.

Thanks John and Charlie – your suggestions worked. I’m now a happy man.
