Ok, so I have just entered the fabulous world of DVD menus & burning and such. I made a DVD & menu which looks great on my computer and dvd player/tv but looked horrid on my folks dvd player/computer.

Part of the issue is, of course, that I didn’t leave the 10% safety zone for my menus, and their TV is “zoomed in” on anything they watch by about 10% (eew)

But the other issue which I MAY be able to do something about is their TV (SD) or maybe their player was not displaying the entire width of the video and blocking in the top and bottom with black, instead it was zoomed in.

On my SD TV it displays the video just fine, with a black stripe above and below the actual video.

I read a while back that there was some fancy way of encoding video with rectangular or square pixels that after a couple passes would ensure it plays properly no matter your setup.

    Any suggestions?

My first suggestion is to strictly adhere to the 10% action safety zone and 20% title safe zone. It is there for a purpose and you just experienced it. Any given TV may or may not display the outer 10% of the picture so don’t plan on putting anything important there.

As for the player issue, there is no encoding trick here. This is specific to how people have their DVD players set up. It sounds like your folks have their set up in Pan and Scan mode which crops 16:9 video to 4:3. Perhaps it was their choice because they don’t like black bars… perhaps it was the default for their player. There is nothing anyone who creates DVDs (including Hollywood) can do about that. You can certainly set up their DVD player to display the 16:9 correctly but it is a function of the player, not how you create the DVD.

If they want their player to display 16:9 with black bars you have to change the player settings for them.

    Unnaceptable answer!

You are supposed to say, “Sure! Just set XYZ on your magical menu Item to YES and it should work for you.”

    Go back and try again.

    😛

Thanks for the info. I figured there was a setting somewhere but couldn’t find it at the time.

John could not have said it better. Put a Hollywood widescreen DVD in the player and see if it crops or pan/scan’s it, then you know for sure.
