  • What camcorders are you using?

Like Jon said you need to make sure all settings reflect DV, with the cam in the play mode you should see “DV” in the top center of the LCD display you, if not goto the Play/out menu and select Playback STD = DV, make sure the firewire is disconnected when you do this or turn the cam on/off after you select the setting otherwise it wouldn’t switch correctly, if it still doesn’t work goto the device manager and see if a “Imaging Device” listing appears when you switch the cam on, if it doesn’t and the cam appears in the “sound video and game controller” section of the device manager you may need to find a IEEE1394 driver that more closely matchs the firewire chipset.

You’ll have to help, my xtal ball is sputtering this morning and wouldn’t lock in on the gazillion combinations of computer types, specs, operations systems, peripherals that you are possibly running CS4 on

July 8, 2010 at 4:55 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro renders forever

[Tom Simon] “I have seen confusion in this forum as to whether CS4 is 64-bit or not. I assume it is only optimized for Vista x64 and not true 64-bit.”
CS4 is 32bit software optimized for a 64bit OS like win7 64, it can use a full 4gigs of ram if there is extra ram for the OS and multitasking, minimum of 6gig, 8gig recomended.

[Tom Simon] “I am rendering a video preview of about 30 minutes of footage. I have waited almost 25 hours so far, and the Premiere says I have 3 hours to go. Something is very wrong.”
What kind of footage are you trying to preview? what effects have you applied to it? Some types of footage can take a long time on older dual core systems

July 8, 2010 at 4:41 pm in reply to: Playback Files in CS3

[Brad Jayne] “.mov, .wmv, .mp4. My system won’t play it back cleanly, unless I put it on the timeline and render it out. Am I missing codecs that would allow me to skip that step? Any other advice?”
If you were missing codecs you wouldn’t be able to play them, the problem is your system is under powered(dual core pentium) for realtime playback of certain HD flavors without rendering, CS3 also has some software limitations for later codec versions, codecs come out then systems and software has to play catchup, smooth realtime editing of AVCHD is looking at fast quad core processors, 64bit OS and CS5 with the Mercury playback system.

YUV is a analog format, what you are looking for is YCbCr420, which is digital, probably using a mpeg color space, 4:2:. you ought to find out what they want to do with it, if they are trying to stick it into a mobile device there are easier ways

[Brad Jayne] “have always had a problem with most files I import, i.e, .mov, .wmv, .mp4. My system won’t play it back cleanly”
    Wouldn’t playback with what?
You should include a system description

  • [robert william] “but if i get windows 7 not the ram will adobe install?”
You basically need a new computer, unless you have a good case and can install parts by yourself, as it looks you need to upgrade everything, so the best way to go would be to buy off the shelf, and keep in mind you maybe have to add things like extra harddrives for video data, etc.

  • [robert william] “does Adobe CS3 support wmv files?”
Yes, be aware that wmv is a highly compressed file that is a end product and they may not edit too well.

If the setup isn’t on the bar at the bottom of the screen, open the taskmanager and terminate any instances of it there, reboot and try again, sometimes if you accidently click the mouse on the screen you can disappear an app.
