shadows have to be enabled in lights, it has to be a light object not the default light that’s always there until you add a real light. Other than that if shadows are enabled you should get a shadow.

Haven’t done a lot of it myself, simplest problem might be have you told it which camera (even if there is only one)? Other than that no clue but maybe these would help.

You can use Optimize on splines too (assuming they are close enough really), you can also use the Weld tool if you select all the points first (just uncheck Only Select Visible Elements then select all the points you want to weld)

a lot of ‘sins’ hidden by speed there. They might be morphing but frame by frame it looks more like they just scale the text in and out and arrange for it to disappear inside the box to start for that middle sequence then from the box just pull shapes out that are arranged to form a box.

baking won’t help likely, to Connect objects into one they have to be all polys you can’t have any primitives or NURBS involved. Why do they need to be all one object, why not just group under a Null? Not saying you don’t have to connect, there are good reasons at times, but do you really need to?

the example looks relatively simple in structure but the texturing is what really makes it. I’d practice textures too.

in the Texture Tag just under Projection is Side, change it from the default Both to Front for one of your textures and Back for the other. You only see the second texture when you render (or if you have Enhanced OGL on).

Something’s wrong with the plane you are cloning, can’t tell what. I substituted it for a new plane and it works.

Dynamics should work relatively well but settings have to be tweaked – gravity depending on scale – then the mass and rotational mass, frictions etc etc to get something you’re happy with. There are other solutions as well, the only one I can think of at the moment is Silver Bullet by Remotion haven’t used it but I’ve heard others say positive things, could be more as well. Here’s a dynamics test that may not be anywhere close to what you’re after but objects don’t pass through each other…

Take a look at the light in Nolan’s example, figure out the differences in settings between that and a default light (not that many really) for starters
