    HI,

I’m trying to get a planet (earth) to have a multicolored glow around it like an atmosphere. I also want the glow to be separate so that I can control it, make it less opague in the center, etc. I tried making a material with a slightly larger radius but I can’t get the edges to be more soft. It’s just looks very plastic.
I tried using a composite tag, but I’m not sure I used it right because nothing seemed to happen.

I’m still pretty new at C4D but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Thad

Well, I guess you were so fast responding, couldn’t even edit my post…?
Anyway, if you like, please download the project-file – planet.zip – from my iDisk:

    Thanks again.

Forgive me, I’m pretty new, but I can’t tell what you did to get the glow. I got rid of everything except the object and there’s still a glow. How did you do it?

It’s a visible light inside the planet with Illumination turned off – it doesn’t need to light anything it just needs to be visible.

Open the Planet, you’ll see two Light Objects “Atm.Light” and “Atmosphere”.
(You might delete the Atm.Light, hasn’t really any functions anymore)
Select the “Atmosphere” and go to the Attributes-Manager and check Visibility,
Inner- and Outer-Distance and Brightness are adjusted to the size of the planet.
(play with Distance and Brightness – check/uncheck Use Falloff)

I just copied the planet from from an fairly old animation.
You might have to zoom in or out to see it all, specially in the other views.
If you like here is the original animation:

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but when I put a light inside of the planet, nothing seems to happen. There are so many settings, I’m not sure where to begin.

Take a look at the light in Nolan’s example, figure out the differences in settings between that and a default light (not that many really) for starters
