10.5 can’t use a lot of fonts. 11.5 does much better and will work with many of the fonts that did not work in 10.5. Some fonts still won’t work though, particularly 3rd party free fonts. If you really want a font and have Illustrator (or some vector program) that will open the font you can always save the font as splines and import.

I’d have to see the scene file myself. You can never expect the preview render to look like an actual render (though it’s usually very close) but without the scene file I can’t tell what’s going on.

C4D doesn’t scale automatically. If you have a 100m sphere and go to Preferences/Units and change units to centimetres from meters the sphere will now say 100cm (not 10,000). Basically you need to choose a working ‘scale’ depending on the project before you start. Since the default scale for incoming Lightwave scenes is 10 already (Preferences/Import.Export/Lightwave Import) I would think you’d want to increase that so they come in at a size you want to work with.

You might want to try the Spherify deformer or the Bulge deformer

on a plane it should not make much difference (to visibility) what mapping you use. Just put the two textures on the plane set one to Front side the other to Back. You won’t see anything but the top (right-most) texture unless you render though or have Enhanced OpenGL on.
