Interesting dilemma – and an interesting response, Tim.

I was not aware that Apple did not allow upgrades from edu products. I think that’s pretty crappy, as the students are the future of any product. I can’t see how it harms Apple to allow an upgrade, as long as the purchaser is still a student when FCS3 is released.

I would note that Apple usually has some sort of ‘sliding scale’ for upgrades based on previous version and (sometimes) purchase near to the release of new products. Certainly, this was offered when FCS2 was released.

On that basis, I would be tempted to delay any purchases as long as possible, with an eye on an ‘up to date’ program working in your favour.

I missed the UK tour date due to work commitments.

Can you clarify something for me, Gary?

Can you use the KiPro in the same way as the IOHD? In other words, can it be used to playback directly from FCP? If not, I guess you can render out your timeline to ProRes and play it out from the KiPro (I work in live enviroments where I might play back to over devices other than tape) but in this case, I presume I wouldn’t get the hardware acceleration of the IOHD, right?

Just trying to figure out where the device fits into AJA’s product tree, and what the advantage and the disadvantages of this are over the IOHD (apart from one-box convenience).

Also, how does it compare sizewise to the IOHD – I always felt that was too big for carry-on editing…

Any time you can spare to answer this very much appreciated..

Open your sequence settings, change it to the appropriate size codec.

Open the first clip in the timeline in the viewer (double click on it), select the motion tab and set the scale back to 100 (it will have been resized smaller in the original timeline). If the footage is distorted, you may also need to adjust the aspect setting as well.

With the first clip corrected, copy it and hit Apple+A (or select all from the menu) to highlight all your video. Right click on it and select ‘paste attributes’. In the resulting menu tick ‘basic motion’ and click ok.

All your video should now be correctly and natively displayed in the timeline. If it is not, you have incorrectly set the sequence settings. To check this, drop a clip into a new sequence, and allow FCP to automatically adjust the timeline to match the footage. Make a note of the sequence settings created, and duplicate them in your existing timeline.

There is a setting in the user preferences that specifies the maximum number of ‘real time’ (ie. no beeps) audio tracks. I would recommend you set this to no more than 6/8, and render out the audio where multiple tracks are used.

Have you considered making a smart folder in finder that can sort the clips before capture – comparing your existing folders with the ones they sent and resolving the difference.

You could then copy the contents of this smart folder to a seperate drive/folder and capture from there…

Just a thought – not tried this myself…

1) Your drive is going to sleep. FCP does not like this – disable this in the energy saving options in system prefs.

2) You have a $100 external drive with valuable footage connected to a $3500 machine. Get some internal drives (which are cheaper than external ones) and RAID them internally. I use Seagate Barracudas, but there are other good makes (and Seagate had a little hiccup with firmware recently, which did not effect me, but scared me a little).

Only use an external drive when you have to transfer material between machines, and use a reliable make if the footage matters to you.

To paraphrase S. Jobs “home-made networked storage is a bag of hurt”.

There’s a lot more to capturing video than theoretical bandwidth, especially as it requires sustained throughput. Packet sizes, switches etc. have to be considered.

I would suggest you go to a professional reseller to get this set up.

If you do a search on this forum for ‘out of memory’ messages in FCP, you will find numerous threads relating to this error.

It is NOT an issue of hard-drive space, nor system NOR graphics memory. It is an error that occurs when the project has been corrupted in some way. Some have found joy in erasing render files.

I have found the best solution to revert to a previously saved version of the project that is stable – you can find them in your autosave vault.

I wonder if we can get this one added to the FAQ (not that anyone ever looks at it…..)
