I know – it’s a rumour (and probably reported here before – I’ve been away working, and not really looked at the Cow recently), but hey, there have to be plenty of people playing with this now, so it’s more and more likely to be accurate. And I love the happy reactions from the regulars.

    From Apple Insider:

“The third major release of Apple’s Final Cut Studio professional video and audio production suite will offer a mixed bag when it comes to advances in individual component applications, half of which will be touted as new releases while the other half see more muted upgrades.

While details are still admittedly limited, people with rudimentary knowledge of Apple’s plans for the software say the suite will introduce major new versions of Final Cut Pro (v7.0), Motion (v4.0), and Soundtrack Pro (v3.0). The remainder of the application upgrades will reportedly consist of point release, and include Color (v1.5), Compressor (v3.5), and DVD Studio Pro (v4.2.2).

A complete breakdown of Final Cut Studio 3.0 component apps with general descriptions is therefore:

Final Cut Pro 7.0: for real-time editing for DV, SD, HD and film.
Motion 4.0: for real-time motion graphics and animation design.
Soundtrack Pro 3.0: for advanced audio post production and sound design.
Color 1.5: for real-time professional color grading.
Compressor 3.5: for high-performance encoding with output in various formats.
DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2: for professional authoring, encoding and burning of DVDs.

Of interest is that DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2 will represent the first upgrade to the DVD authoring application in roughly two years but won’t introduce any new features. It appears as if the software will follow the path of iDVD, a similar offering geared towards the consumer market that was hung out to dry alongside the release of iLife ’09 as Apple pushes online distribution.

Final Cut Studio 3.0 is currently undergoing beta testing under the code-name Sideways in the form of a 2.8 gigabyte disk image. Some of its component applications, including Color 1.5 and Motion 4.0, have been accessible to some of Apple’s professional video editing partners for months so that they could evaluate the software when run atop betas of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The finalized suite, along with an update to Final Cut Server code-name Dingo, are believed to be on track for a release sometime later this summer or early this fall, following the release of Snow Leopard.”

There ya go. Flame away about rumours if you like, but I’d be willing to bet £20 the majority of this is accurate. Now – a release date? Not so accurate…. Personally I was hoping Apple would grow a pair and roll all these disparate and random GUI apps into one super integrated single app that just swapped layout when you wanted to do CC, or Motion graphics. That would kick Adobe into touch. Alas not.

All this says is that it has a code name, it has been beta tested (well, no duh), and what the new version numbers will be. Other than that…what does it say? Nada. Well, that DVD SP has been updated, but not really.

That is a pretty useless rumor if you ask me.

Yeah, I’m still waiting for Final Cut Extreme (from 2 years ago) and the big event back in March and the other big announcement of Color 1.5 at NAB, and… and…. who really cares. When it comes out, we’ll all know what’s in it.

So Ben, you go ahead and order all your new gear and get ready for FCS 3 based on this rumor. I’ll just keep working and when Apple does get around to announcing the new software, I’ll make may plans accordingly.

I’m really getting tired of all these useless rumor threads. Just go stay over in Apple Insider if that’s what you want to read about. Can’t wait to see what the rumor thread is about next week, and then the week after that. and then as soon as FCS 3 comes out, we’ll have the weekly rumors about FCS 4. We really need a forum dedicated to rumors of all kinds so we can keep them out of the regular forums. Just too stupid and so inaccurate to even be on here.

    Word!

If there’s anyplace that Adobe really excels, it’s in integrating it’s product line together. They’ve put a ton of effort into getting all the apps to have a similar appearance & similar keystrokes, with the Bridge to tie up the loose ends. Apple & Avid could stand to learn a few things from them.

Not that Apple’s “send to” workflow is bad, but they could really work on unifying the GUI. I mean, the file dialogs in Color make Shake look user friendly!

And while they’re at it, FX Plug in every app! And free coffee!!!

They’ll get to all that when they’re done with Leopard and the iPhone. Oh, wait… when they’re done with Snow Leopard and the new new iphone. Oh, wait, they’ll get to it after the BIG OS update Lion or whatever they call it. Wait, they’ll get to it after they make the transition from intel processors to the G6, and finish the iCar…. oh, wait…

And miss all the fun of another useless rumor thread? I love the idea of one “super app” that does everything. Awesome idea to ensure that we’ll have an incredibly unstable software. Even Adobe hasn’t tried that one because it’s just not practical.

You want an editing software to edit really well.

You want a compositing software to work really well.

You want a color enhancement software to work really well, and so on.

And you want all of those to have a nice workflow between them.

I don’t want a super app that does absolutely everything because that’s just a bogged down app that has a lot of features I don’t need all the time. I want the tools available to me when I need them and I want every single feature for each and every tool. Not some tools left out because we’re making a super app.

Anyway, y’all enjoy another rumor thread so y’all can talk a lot about nothing. Sounds like an old TV sitcom….. all we need is the tall scraggly haired neighbor and we’re all set.

Well, hell, I’m gonna stick my neck out here and predict FCS3 will be announced at the UK supermeet on June 26. That’s why Walter Murch is being flown in. Either that or he’s read the CV I sent him.

    But hey, whadda I know??

    Hi
Well FCS 3 is still going to need all of Murch’s project asset workarounds because Media Manager won’t get fixed (and most of the rest of FCP 6 as well)… 🙁

Hey Steve said it himself after his first near-death diagnosis experience:
Death is …Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new… someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away… Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice…

So Steve’s going with that inner voice that Motion is where the whizz is at, and Color needs a new GUI so that all 8 secondaries can be worked on side by side simultaneously at the forthcoming keynote of Snow Leopard. Randy will show off iMovie 640K- ought to be enough for anybody…
Final Cut? Old. Clear that away!
