[simon redmile] ” an offline quality such as Apple Pro Res”

ProRes is not an offline codec, it’s a high quality, visually ‘lossless’ editing and mastering codec. It’s still the best choice for transcoding via REDCine, and is an option for log and transfer (which gives you less options for framing and quality.)

I don’t recommend anyone to attempt a paying RED job without spending considerable time getting used to the workflow and the data management of R3D footage.

Oh – forgot to say – PLEASE don’t use your system drive as a media drive. It always causes problems and dropped frames as it fills up. Apple’s own advice is to always use a seperate media drive.

External drives are cheap and reliable mostly – you can find many good pro makes advertising here.

April 19, 2009 at 11:13 pm in reply to: The New Mac Pro, Any Faster?

Recent postings on REDUser, including one from the big cheese, suggest that a top of the line 2.93Ghz new Mac Pro will be TWICE as fast at processing R3Ds as the last gen. I’d post a link here, but the Cow and REDUser don’t get on…

Of course – they do cost twice the money…. I prefer two machines, one of which I can actually work on whilst the other is processing. Just depends on your specific workflow.

April 11, 2009 at 1:31 pm in reply to: reconnecting uncompressed files to pro res offline…

This could happen if your offline files were accidentally created with a different frame rate.

As an aside – why were you given uncompressed EIGH-bit files? 10-bit would have been much better quality for post if you intend to use colour correction or effects…

Interesting info on the MXO2 – not tried a longer capture – I was thinking I’d use DVCProHD if i had to do a portable HD job…

Not sure why everyone (cough) gets so sniffy about rumours here. Sure, they’re often wrong, but it’s fun to speculate. If you don’t want to join in, just ignore the thread, and get on with your day…
