    Dear Creative Cow People
I have recently agreed to take on an editing gig scheduled for next month using RED footage. The only issue is I have not been able to find any substantial material about how to import and use RED footage if you don’t already know everything about it. I know very little about red and I was wondering if any one could point me in the direction of some solid reading, not just forums. I am specifically looking for, hardware necessities, Plug ins, and the famed ” RED CAM WHITE PAGES” which have been very elusive to me. Thanks for the help
    Cheers
    Thomas.

    Cheers.

See if you can get some clips to work with so you get a feel for this. there’s a lotta ways to skin this red cat, and more evolving. Red is a moving target. get the principles on debayering down and be aware that the project needs preproduction more than anything else
there are several opportunities to do some great work or bone yourself completely

First things first, you need to start doing tests to learn the workflow.

Go to RedRelay.net Get some Red footage for free.

    Then go to:
    https://www.scribd.com/doc/12556567/Using-RED-Media-with-Final-Cut-Pro-Studio-2

Important questions to ask are whether they are shooting 2k or 4k. You will also need to go to Red’s website to get the utilities.

You can cut using the proxies that the RED creates but this can be unstable. You’ll probably want to use the software RED provide on their site to take the footage down to an offline quality such as Apple Pro Res to cut with and then do a conform once your done.

That’s just one option though, all I’d say is make sure you’ve chosen your work flow before you get started!

    Good luck!

[simon redmile] ” an offline quality such as Apple Pro Res”

ProRes is not an offline codec, it’s a high quality, visually ‘lossless’ editing and mastering codec. It’s still the best choice for transcoding via REDCine, and is an option for log and transfer (which gives you less options for framing and quality.)

I don’t recommend anyone to attempt a paying RED job without spending considerable time getting used to the workflow and the data management of R3D footage.
