April 4, 2014 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Blackmagic and AJA Video Output devices with Premiere ProThanks Walter – that’s the feeling I was getting with the BMD products, it seemed more restrictive than I was expecting. I don’t have an IOXT to test, but do have a Mac Pro with a Kona 3 (somewhere!) and I think some more testing is in order.
Enjoy NAB.

Our own research leads to only certain codecs being acceptable to the Blackmagic boxes for preview – so we were concerned about the workflow consequences.
I’ll be investigating further – overall this is a minor concern at present, and whilst PPro and Mavericks are not very stable, it’s a good product that’s improving all the time.

September 24, 2013 at 2:06 pm in reply to: first time mac buyer need to know specs, for editing Final Cut Pro/adobe premiereYou can use a FW800 drive with any Mac that has Thunderbolt via an adapter. Just be aware that due to the technical limitations of TB, you cannot BUS power that drive via the adapter, so you need to use the power supply that came with the drive.
If you want to edit with DSLR footage, don’t bother with FCP7. I’ve just rough-cut a 15 min doco in Adobe Premiere CC all shot on a 5D – no need to transcode, especially to ProRes which will take up a lot more space. The whole notion of a transcoding just to edit is a bit old now. FCPX, as much as it is maligned, is also a great tool for DSLR editing – and it sounds like you are not a ‘power user’ based on your specs, so it’s ease of use might interest you.
I’m not sure if Shane mentioned it, but whatever you get (and for my money, it’s an iMac if you don’t need portable and a Macbook Pro if you do) just make sure you get plenty of RAM – all new apps like Adobe CC and FCPX need a lot of it. 16Gb of ram is not expensive for these machines and should be considered a minimum now.

September 24, 2013 at 1:59 pm in reply to: File Error: Unknown file – all the time in my FCPThe location you set to send render files to, or the location you are using to save the project to probably does not exist. Have you ejected an external drive accidentally.
FCP throws up this error if a volume goes offline. Check in your system settings in FCP, and also try saving the project to your desktop temporarily.

Thanks – perhaps you could update the thread when one I’d announced? Can you provide a list price for Platform Studio?

Hi Nate
What sort of support would I expect in the UK?

Thanks Eric. I do appreciate the advice. It’s clear I need to talk this through more with my reseller – I’m sure he’d agree with you on this.

Sorry – forgive multiple posts.
If I use MetaSAN I wouldn’t be relying on the Mac Mini as the server in a small setup would I? One of the workstations would as the Master and I’d run the RAID bonded to the switch. Or have I missed something?

As far as Small Tree goes, I approached them a few years ago, and they had no support or dealers for their solutions in the UK – that was a dealbreaker for me.

5 drives? I had an 8 drive unit before on 4 workstations, and it struggled (it was a Midi Space system, so no slouch). How many systems would those 5 drives support?
I have to admit I’m curious about the smaller units (Platform as well from ProMax although I can find no info on UK suppliers or support) and whether they’re now quick enough for my use. Ingest always seems to hit a SAN, and I’ve got a lot of ingest…
