Nice to read a rumour that offers a little more than bland assurances of FCS3. I’ve no doubt that updates LIKE this are under NDA-style testing at the moment, probably by some readers of this forum, so I offer this info solely for discussion. Perhaps we can avoid the usual: “Yeah, and Apple will release FCS6 with frickin’ laser beams” comments….

    From Apple Insider:

    “Pro App updates

Also under evaluation by developers and a select group of creative professionals are several Pro Application updates that are nearing a public release. Among them is a new version of Apple’s ProRes Codec for its high-definition lossy video compression format and a significant update to the company’s professional color grading software application labeled Color 1.5.

Furthermore, Apple is testing significant but incremental updates to Final Cut Server and Motion 4, both of which should see a release in the near term. Video production houses that uses these applications alongside Xsan 2.x may also be interested in learning that a new point release of cluster file system software code-named “Carrera” is also due for release shortly. Xsan was last updated to version 2.1 in June of 2008.”

Lossy video compression? Like the sound of an updated ProRes, and updated Color. A full update to Motion sounds like FCS3 to me. If all this were true, do you think it would be enough to warrant a complete FCS update? Personally, I think Apple have to do something in the next few months….

I’ll wait until April 20th to comment.

I think it’s time to start a new forum. Final Cut Pro Rumors and just move all of these threads over there.

Talking about April 20th Walter, will you be speaking / presenting at the FCPUG booth at NAB or Supermeet. I have not seen anything yet posted about schedule on either site. I know the booth is supposed to have hourly demos. Thinking of taking the Advanced Techniques for Final Cut Studio Class on Tuesday. Been editing about 10 years 3 with FCP. Gone to some other classes previously, and they have been very basic show and tell and sales pitches.I already work with the system, own it personally so I am not looking for a sales pitch. Peers in the area are very good, but I am searching for something to push me over to the next level (Just because there should always be a next level). Any suggestions?

    thanks

Sorry to hear that, was hoping to meet some of the Cow FCP Forum leaders.

Something that is not a rumor is Smartsound’s integration with FCP. We have been using it here for about 6 months on a series of projects for closed circuit distribution. Library is growing and even tho some of the tracks sound a bit funky you can adjust, isolate, change the mood, etc. I think it will be a great addition if it could be used with the Soundtrack Pro library of music & effects. Imagine what that could do to the boxed music catalogs when audio projects are sold on ebay at bargain basement prices and all you have to do is re-link to Smartsound Sound Track Pro.

I believe Pro Res in it’s current state is considered Lossless, my guess is that they are following Avid’s DNxHD codec with a lower bitrate version. Avid came out with 2 versions of DNxHD at higher bit rates then came out with a 36mb/s version for offline use.

[Devin Crane] “I believe Pro Res in it’s current state is considered Lossless”

No, it’s not. It’s a compressed format which Apple states: “for uncompressed HD quality at SD file sizes.”

In fact if you read the white paper, they’re very careful not to use the word lossless at all, because it’s not. There is an admission that it is a compressed format.

The real issue has been ProRes HQ which has ingest and render problems on many machines, including all of ours.

I have a Matrox MXO2 running on a MBP 2.5g and Prores is a challenge for it, but maybe a ‘lossy’ Prores could be the alternative?… maybe thats the reason why… hmmmm

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

What problems do you have with ProRes HQ? Use it constantly. Never heard of any problems…
