I am trying to figure out why final cut pro 6 keeps freezing up.
I have one Western digital mybook studio edition external hard drive hooked up through an 800 firewire.

Sometimes when capturing footage or editing in the timeline it will freeze up with the “wheel of death” and I have to do a hard restart of the computer, there are no similar circumstances or triggers each time it crashes. The computer is the latest mac pro desktop with all the best gadets, whole computer was about $3,500 bucks. 2 gigs of memory most updated versions of every software/hard ware and video card. The files are P2 card files from the panasonic HVX200. It freezes about once every other day. I have OS 10.2, the footage is 720P HD footage, I am editing over 8 hours a day on it.

any ideas on why it freezes everyday while editing?

OS 10.2? PANTHER? Or is that Jaguar? Dude, the latest OS is 10.5…Leopard. If you are running FCP 5.1 or FCP 6.0, you need to be at least on 10.4.11 or 10.5.6. 10.2 is WAY too old. And what version of Quicktime are you using? For 10.4.11 you need to be running QT 7.3 at least…or 7.4. For Leopard you need 7.6.

I think you are running too old of a system for P2, or a very mismatched one.

[rachel pandza] “The computer is the latest mac pro desktop”
[rachel pandza] “I have OS 10.2”

It is impossible for the latest Mac Pro to run OS 10.2, this is because the Mac Pro is an Intel Machine, and there was NEVER a version of 10.2 that would run on an Intel.

So what version of the OS are you really running?
If it really is the latest then it would have come with 10.5 on it.

    A couple of other things.

With a Mac Pro why not put some additional drives inside the machine to edit from. The sata connections of internal drives are 2x as fast as FW800 that you are working with.

It is also strongly recommended to have at least 4 GB of ram in a computer that you use FCP on. You said you currently have only 2GB

Also I just realized after looking at the specks of the latest Mac Pro’s, the smallest amount of ram that they come with is 3GB, and you say you have 2GB or ram.

I apologize if I seem a little harsh, but it is just that what you are telling us just does not add up, and it can be difficult to help if we don’t know what exactly is in your machine, both hardware and software.

Might I suggest that you go to “about this mac” and find out exactly what your machine is.

Is it the latest, when did you purchase this machine and was it from apple / apple authorised dealer?

I’m guessing your external hard drive is the culprit. Put some internal HD’s in your system and make sure the “put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible” is unchecked.

This was bought straight from apple, it actually is leopard 10.5.2 it was bought may of last year. The quicktime is the most updated version and everything has been the same, no new downloads or anything and it just started doing it. I had been working on it for a year beforehand and it was fine. I think it may be the mybook 1Terbayte studio edition, I’ve heard people had some problems with, it goes to sleep whenever it wants sometimes. What is the best hard drive to switch it with the maxtor one-touchs I have seem to work fine. I need an affordable terabyte or 1.5T with 800firewire

    1) Your drive is going to sleep. FCP does not like this – disable this in the energy saving options in system prefs.

    2) You have a $100 external drive with valuable footage connected to a $3500 machine. Get some internal drives (which are cheaper than external ones) and RAID them internally. I use Seagate Barracudas, but there are other good makes (and Seagate had a little hiccup with firmware recently, which did not effect me, but scared me a little).

Only use an external drive when you have to transfer material between machines, and use a reliable make if the footage matters to you.

Hi I’m having a heart attack.
I need to send a client this 1 minute animation, which I made in AE CS3,
exported as a (.mov) and placed it FCpro to match real time audio and some time issues in the animation. I started to cut the video and speeding up and slowing down some parts of it, directly in the edition. But at the third time that I rendered, the cursor (in a MAC) start to look like its freezing and a message appear, something like that I have to turn off the “unlimited RT” and some other issues. First of all “what a hell is that” to me it seams that is a memory issue, but I have enough resources, that the video is there but with no image or preview, now I can’t see anything, the render it won’t work. I restart FC and the machine “3 times and nothing!!” and when I try to exported and error occurred.

I create a new project from scratch and rename the mov file and it seems to work, but when I tried to render for the first time the same thing happened AGAIN!!

    HELP!!!!

I have tree dedicated hard drives with enough space, and a decent ram.
Is the first time that something like this happened!!!!

The video size is 3.5 gigs, but I don’t thing that is an issue…

Please I need some advise I need to finish this video ASAP.

Antoine it is best to start a new post for a new question. This existing chat thread is 5 months old, and it is not polite to thread Jack with your own new question.
