  • Issues capturing to a network drive

Posted by Ian Liuzzi-fedun on May 9, 2009 at 5:53 am

I have a network raid that I have been attempting to capture to. There is more than enough throughput, however at the end of each capture to the network source I get an error with reconnecting the video file. When I go to see if the video was captured in the network drive, it shows a media file of only a few hundred megabytes. Upon opening this with quicktime, it tells me that the file is not a valid movie file. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Could you tell us more about this network drive?

[Ian Liuzzi-Fedun] “I have a network raid that I have been attempting to capture to.”

Doesn’t tell us much. Make? How many units connected to it? How are they connected? etc….

I have an external raid connected to an Xserve which then serves out the data over AFP. Right now, I only have 1 client for testing purposes.

[Mark Raudonis] “The data rate over ethernet is probably too low to support the data rate of
    your digitizing stream. “

Set up correctly, Ethernet actually works beautifully. We get over 100MB/s on our Final Share system from MaxxDigital which has 6 systems all sharing one RAID via Ethernet. We’re cutting ProRes 720 and 1080i material all day long on at least three systems at a time. amazing.

[Ian Liuzzi-Fedun] ” I had sustained speeds in excess of 60mb/s.”

Data rate alone is not enough. Your array must be set up correctly in order to play back the media AS does your Ethernet setup.

Our array runs almost 650MB/s and our Ethernet speeds are over 100MB/s, but you need to make sure your Server and System are both set up correctly in your Network settings in order to play back video properly. We were dropping frames in DVCPro HD when we first set it up and then all our system were re-configured properly and that stopped all the dropped frames all the way up to 8bit Uncompressed SD and ProRes HD.

Okay….so what is this “proper setup?”

    There’s your problem.

The data rate over ethernet is probably too low to support the data rate of
    your digitizing stream.

What format (DV, XDCAM, uncompressed, etc) are you trying to do?

Depending on how much traffic there is on your network, AFP will really only work with DV and lower.

We use systems connected Via AFP all the time, but we DON’T digitize. We only playback. As a work around, try digitizing to your local drives, then move the media (Via AFP) to your NAS.

As I have already stated, there is plenty of bandwidth. I had sustained speeds in excess of 60mb/s. I am just doing DV. I thought of your workaround and am working with that now, however for the long term, I do not want to do this. I would like to resolve this so I can digitize full 1 hour tapes without any issues. On my next post, I will give you a screen shot of the error.

[Ian Liuzzi-Fedun] “Okay….so what is this “proper setup?” “

That depends on your system. What did your VAR / Installer / Manufacturer tell you to set up?

Our system was installed by WH Platts here in Atlanta and both Small Tree and MaxxDigital did remote configuration on our systems. They kept testing it until everything was tuned correctly for our needs. They can do this from anywhere via internet connection.

I have a custom raid box that I filled with drives myself. I seem to be missing something because I just cannot understand why if there is a sustained transfer rate that well exceeds the DV minumum why I would not be able to capture DV media. Here is the error I mentioned:
