Wayne, I think you’re confusing bits (little ‘b’) & bytes (big ‘B’). DV 25 is 25 mb/sec, or 3.6 mB/sec.

I’ve been hearing that for something like 15 years. And yet, SCSI is still one of the fastest I/O options available. Only 4Gb fiber currently beats SCSI for bandwidth, although the networking options with fiber are a great selling point.
If you don’t need the networking, I still think SCSI is a viable option. Especially with enclosures that use ATA or SATA drives to build a SCSI RAID, which make it really cost effective.
But that’s just my opinion. YMMV 🙂

You put a 1 frame audio & picture ‘pop’ at the head & tail of your show, & when your mixer gives you the mixdown tracks back, you simply line the audio pops back up to the picture pops. The head pop is typically 2 seconds before the first frame of video (coinciding with the last frame of your countdown), & the tail pop is usually 5 seconds after the last frame.

For this kind of quick & dirty roto job, I’d export the clip to motion, do the roto there, & import the Motion project back into FCP. It’s an extra couple of steps, but the mask tools in Motion are waaaaay better than they are in FCP.

It probably does. Have you rendered your dissolves? Most of these type of “why does this look so crappy” type questions come down to something that’s not been rendered & is only being seen in preview quality.

How did you convert the clips? Why are they .mov, instead of .aif (or .aiff)?

You really need to speak to your lab now, before you start production. Each lab is set up differently, and the lab you eventually choose will no doubt have it’s own preferred way of doing things. Think of the lab as a partner or collaborator, and work with them. Nowadays, most labs should be able to take delivery on hard drives, typically uncompressed tiff or targa sequences, or in any common tape format.
