You should be aware that even with the best software, it’s a time consuming process that requires a lot of hand work. Also, a lot of this is done with backgrounds that originate in 3D software.

Not in SD. Both 4X3 & 16X9 have exactly the same pixel dimensions. The difference for SD is the shape of the pixels, themselves. Uncompressed SD pixels are rectangular, uncompressed HD pixels are square (in an effort to further confuse us, some compressed HD codecs use rectangular pixels). For NTSC, SD is 720X486, regardless of the aspect ratio. For 4X3, those pixels are taller than they are wide, for 16X9, they’re wider than they are tall. But both are still 720X486 (which would give you an aspect ratio of 40X27 if they actually were square).

I think the near future is SATA to either SCSI or Fiber. When we finally get a variety of controllers that let us put a goodly number of drives together as RAID 3 or RAID 5, then I’ll shout SATA from every rooftop & steeple. I don’t see SAS in our market due to it’s high cost & lack of large drives- but if that changes I’d shout SAS from every rooftop & steeple, too!
But what do I know? I’m just an editor.

Take one down to your nearest Radio Shack or consumer electronics mega store & see what they have that can match all of the specs. You probably want to find one of these ‘universal’ jobbies that will come with several different connectors & can be adjusted to voltage, impedance, etc.

I went to a small SMPTE show 2 weeks ago, & one of the Sony reps told me that they will be releasing a plugin to import the 25Mbps material into FCP 5 natively, Usimilar to how you can now work with XDCam in SD or P2) in a month or 2. He though that by the end of the summer we’d be able to work with all of the data rates, and maybe have all of the XDCam HD features available to us by the end of the year. But he wasn’t to sure about the timetables. If you can wait till they release the plugin, then at least you’d be able to shoot at the 25Mbps data rate until they release an upgrade. Till they release any plugin, you’re limited to capturing over SDI.
