simple edl question
Posted by Zeliha Bozkurt on June 19, 2006 at 10:13 amHi
When you export an EDL from Final Cut Pro 5, does it export all the video tracks, that are in your sequence?
I was once adviced to to each video track individually which is a pain. 🙁Thanks
Zee 🙂

June 19, 2006 at 12:09 pmOne video track at a time. You’re dealing with 1970 technology!

June 19, 2006 at 2:26 pm[Arniepix] “EDLs, by definition will only export 1 video track.”
Is that for definite?
I just gave the production team an EDL of this 100 programme to calculate archive footage usage.
I think I am going to have to re do it 🙁

June 19, 2006 at 4:00 pmYes. You have to understand what an EDL is.
EDL ‘s were designed for linear edit controllers. It’s a 1970’s convention. This means tape-to-tape editing systems. In this scenario you are building a master tape shot by shot from source tapes. There was no concept of “tracks” at the time. There was just a record machine. An EDL cannot fully reflect what non-linear editing system is capable of.
Its really not that big a deal to make multiple EDL’s. Just duplicate your sequence as many times as you have video tracks. Delete all the other tracks except for the layer you need for the EDL.
If you are moving your project to an Avid system, the best way is to use Automatic Duck.

to reiterate:
Subject Re: How many video tracks can be imported into FCP via EDL?
[Original Poster] “I have been told that through the CMX 3600 EDL, that I can only import a total of 2 video tracks.”
You have been told correctly.
FCP Manual. Volume One. Chapter 17 “Exporting Edit Decision Lists (EDLs) and Batch Lists”
“A superimposed video track, or any track other than V1, is called a key track in an EDL. Only
one key track can be in an EDL, so information for V1 and V2 tracks only appears in an
exported EDL. ”You have to export separate EDLs for each additional track.

EDL’s aren’t a mystery for me anymore.
