  • audio crackles and pops ONLY in the sequence not in the viewer

Posted by Steve Taylor on June 7, 2006 at 11:50 pm

i am using audio converted from .bwf files into .mov files.
they play fine in quicktime and also in the viewer. in the sequence however, they sound terrible. the levels are still there, but a crackling pervades the entire length of every clip.

the strangest thing is that the files play perfectly in the sequences on our other system.

the system with problems is FCP 5 on a powerbook G4 1.25 ghz processor with 2 GB RAM and OSX 10.4. the other system is the same FCP but on a G5 desktop with OSX 10.3.

any ideas on how to solve this one?

Are the “converted” files made into 16bit, 48 kHz clips?

If that’s what your timeline audio is set for, that’s what they should be.

I use QuickTime Pro or iTunes to convert “other format” audio files into 16bit, 48 kHz clips that work well in FCP.

yes, the clip settings are the same as the sequence settings, so i don’t think that is the problem.

i dont understand why a) the clips play in the viewer but not in the sequence, and b) why they will work on one system but not the other even when i am using the exact same project.

    thanks.

How did you convert the clips? Why are they .mov, instead of .aif (or .aiff)?

Try doing a Audio Mixdown on your sequence. Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown or Opt>Cmd>R. This creates a separate audio file for your sequence to read for playback (doesn’t effect actual audio).

i converted the files from .bwf with a program called bwf2xml. this creates .mov reference files that can be used in FCP. i then exported those as .mov files so i could have independent files to work with. i’ve tried making .aiff files, too, but the same thing happens.

because they play ok in the viewer and on the G5 system, i am thinking it is some kind of sequence setting or preference, but i have gone through every setting i can find and still cant figure it out. and others have tried to fix this, too but to no avail.

    i’ll keep trying
