you can paste to any track using the “autoselect” for targeting … option click on the autoselect icon for the track you wish to target then place your cursor to mark the in point, and paste
the autoselect icon is the one directly to the right of the track’s padlock (track lock) icon

anyone holding off on purchasing decisions should bear in mind that whilst NAB (April) usually brings a windfall of product announcements, it is often not until IBC (September) when they actually ship.
if you have a need for todays latest and greatest, then go get it now … by the time tomorrows latest and greatest is ready you’ll be able to indulge yourself by dipping into your profits from the interim.

open the 5.1 project in a 5.1.x version of FCP and export as XML version 2
that XML should import on your version 5.0.x system

there’s no myth here, honestly. the advice that is meted out in this regard is based on best practices for the vast majority of users, in order to ensure the best possible user experience.
to suggest that a Final Cut Pro editor should need to check for and necessarily quit system processes if and when they drop frames when capturing to their system disc is far from realistic.
what is far more realistic is that the editor get themselves a good, fast and reliable media drive. this obviates the need for such alternative measures. plus brings a number of key advantages for overall media managemnt.

no one doubts your experience, professionalism, or indeed, the truth in what you’re saying. but it’s not good “general” advice. now, if you’re in the business of laptop news gathering or similar, where an external media drive may not be practical (or is otherwise unavailable due to problems of an elephantine nature) then the points you’ve brought up have a lot of merit. but other than that, your suggestion that the usual advice is somehow the needless peretuation of a myth is a little unfair.

don’t be discouraged if you run up against opposition on this or any other viewpoint though. your point is very well made, and any and all experience and knowledge is very welcome here

if you do find yourself editing the audio in the viewer, due to the far greater detail available from that view, then an extra trick is to pull the audio tab off the viewer window and drop it down onto the timeline window … gives you a bit of extra space.

if its DV then look under the Clip Settings tab in the Log and Capture window … check the “Preview” checkbox next to the audio settings
if its HDV then this Preview function is not available… you will need to hook speakers up to the source deck.

if you are using that “jump drive” with FAT32 formatting then it may be you just need to add a .mov extension to your quicktime files to get the PC side to recognise them

You might also investigate using Compressor to transcode … you’ll have far more control over the process within that application.
Select a small example clip and test with that until you get the results you like, then make that a preset to use on the remaining clips.
