Do you get any error message, or does it just crash?

I think that’s just how RSMB works, cause it can’t tell which pixels are actually moving underneath what..

I think the way to go would be to mask out the overlaying stucture.. using the object buffer and apply RSMB to a separate layer underneath.

I finally got it sorted out – page 8 in the quickstart PDF for r11.5

Basically it doesn’t work like in Maya for example.

With an object thats axis has been rotated:
Switch to World orientation and lock the X and Z axis (for example), now click OUTSIDE the object and drag. The object will move only in the world Y axis, ie up.
Switch between World and Object axis to notice the difference.

Unfortunately I don’t understand what you want to achieve. Could you show some images of what you have and want to achieve?

Just like Dave says, play around – that’s the best way to find out.

A few tips though that might be hard to find on your own though:

Turning on the adjustment layer switch on a light will make that light only affect the layers underneath it.

Lights can also have a negative value – meaning they’ll project darkness!

In the material options you can switch the shadows to ON, OFF and ONLY by clicking on it.

If I understand correctly all you want to do is have the same image layer with duplicated with the individual parts masked out?

What I’d to is duplicate the layer 3 times and delete the unwanted masks in the corresponding layers.
If there’s a lot of masks, I use the Separate_Masks_in_Layers script from https://www.crgreen.com/aescripts/

For now the only thing I can contribute with is two nulls and tie the start and end points of the Beam effect to either null.
That will only create a straight line.

How to get the curve or if you could use these nulls to move vertex points in a mask, I don’t know, …yet!!

Edit: Ah! By now I found your reply on h264 editing, which answers my query. I still leave my question here anyway ./edit

“HDV captured in its acquisition codec is a no-no in AE”

I did not know that – but then again I rarely use video.

So what does this actually mean? That I should capture HDV (which I presume uses a MPEG codec) output to something else, like a tiff sequence, before using it in After Effects?

    Thanks!

I can think of a few sollutions:
    1. Animating or keyframing masks.
    2. Use particular with a custom particle deformed with turbulent displace.
    3. cc Mr Mercury, although I’ve hardly used the effect. As far as I know it has this kind of meta ball effect.

“application that can re-invent video that’s been blocked by text.”

That made me think of re:vision effects’ re:fill plug (which I’ve never used..) I assume the holes left by the text would be too big to be filled in well though.
