The easiest solution would be if somebody who had that image could upload it here.

A better solution might be for somebody to remake that image at a higher resolution. If I can find the emitter/image I’ll upload it, but that might mean firing up a really old machine, and that’s not going to happen too quickly.

Increase “f-life”. The free emitters that are creating those particles are dying too early.

Is this the Pro Emitter? What is the exact emitter name (and library)?

I’m always open to accept emitters from users, but there are a few potential issues:

    1) Nobody ever says that they have some emitters to contribute
    2) Are the emitters different enough from existing ones? (are they modifications of existing emitters?)
    3) Do they meet my quality requirements? I’m usually pretty picky.
    4) Do they contain images that are copyright-free? This is not always easy to tell, and could be a problem.
    5) Time. It still takes time to collect these, review them, make small edits if needed, put them into a library, etc.

If people want to contribute emitters, please do! You can send them to alan at genarts dot com, but please make sure none of the items 2-4 above are going to be a problem.

What it really comes down to is what the particle images will be used for. If you’re doing sparkles all the time that render as 10×10 pixels, even in a 1080 project, using larger images won’t gain you anything.

If however you want those particles to be large, like some of the more graphic or textural emitters in the Pro Emitter sets — something that is going to take up a significant portion of the frame — then you’ll want larger particle images.

But using large images for small particles is not good either. pI currently does not support MIP mapping, so cramming a big image onto a tiny particle doesn’t look as good as it could. Plus it wastes texture memory like crazy.

  • Nope, sorry. Many of those 128×128 sprites are 10 years old, back when texture RAM was at a premium and it didn’t make sense for large textures. There are some larger sprites in more recent libraries (2012) but not replacements for everything.

BTW, you don’t want to use a 512×512 sprite for particles that will be 5 pixels in the final render. Visual results will be terrible.

Are your forces overlapping? I’d make them NOT overlap, so a particle can’t be in both force areas at the same time.

pI doesn’t work like AE as you’ve found.

If you want to experiment with changing the value without creating a keyframe, grab the last keyframe (most likely the one at frame 1) and drag it around.

January 21, 2013 at 3:31 pm in reply to: PI For AE version 1.04 not installing in CS6

After install there is a “plug-in copy” subfolder in the particleIllusion Application folder. You can copy the file there into the correct “plug-ins” folder for CS6 for a “manual install” if needed.

I’m wondering why it would fail to detect though. Do you have CS6 installed in some strange location? Did you install CS6 normally, using the AE installer?

January 18, 2013 at 7:26 pm in reply to: No More Emitters?

Joe — no worries, I understand where you’re coming from.

Most pI users do not regularly download the emitter libraries, or don’t use them even if they do download. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) those who do download and use them rely on them.

The information on the reduced emitter frequency is in about the only place it makes sense: on the emitter downloads page of wondertouch.com. I can understand how you missed it, but email is no longer a reliable way of reaching customers (too much spam filtering).

The “mouse” emitter depends 98% on the images used for the particles, and 2% on pI. In other words, it’s really got nothing to do with pI. We don’t have access to a professional animator, so those types of emitters are almost impossible to create.

I’ll think about the tutorials. How they’re created from scratch is difficult, as most evolve from existing emitters, but analyzing how they work is possible and probably almost as good.
