pI’s video support is not very good. Some things to try:

    – In Preferences there is a “use old method of loading AVIs” checkbox. Check that and see if it speeds things up. Note that you won’t be able to use DV AVIs — if you get an error message that tells you that the codec the clip uses is not supported by the “old method of loading AVIs”.

    – Avoid WMV.

    – Try converting the AVI into an image sequence (JPG or PNG).

    – Convert the AVI to another codec.

    – In the OpenGL page of Preferences, toggle the “use texture RAM for bg images” and see if it makes a difference.

None of those may help much, so you may be stuck doing this:

    – Create a lower-resolution version of the clip, use that to setup your particle effects, then use the “Scale Project” function in the “Action” menu to scale up to the final resolution as a last step.

For best quality, use the video in pI as a reference only. As a final step turn off the bg image and render just the particles with an alpha channel. Then bring the particle footage into your video editor and overlay on the original video.

It’s a misconception that once GenArts bought wondertouch the emitter libraries faltered. Look back over the release list, and only one month was missed (Jan 2010) until 2012, when I decided that the libraries should be scaled back. One thing that nobody mentions is that only after the switch to GenArts did we get Tom Granberg to create emitters every month — before that I was typically making most of the emitters. With Tom the quality of the emitters went way up.

All of those questions I asked — I’ll probably send out a survey to pI customers to find out exactly what they want and expect of the emitters. It wasn’t so much your message that prompted me to respond like this, but it certainly helped me to get some of those questions down.

I’m not yet sure of what the emitter library release schedule will be for 2013, but we’re not giving up on releasing emitters. What we will be doing though is trying to find out exactly what people want from them.

Also, this is a *user* forum. I monitor it regularly, but if you have a problem with pI or a question about it that other users can’t answer your best bet is to email us at GenArts directly. Support at genarts dot com is always a good place to start.

    Emitters are coming.

I typically don’t respond to “where are the emitters” type messages because I feel it’s pointless.

I have so many questions about emitter library releases, I’m not sure where to start…

Have we reached a saturation point on emitters? Are there too many to choose from already (there are well over 3000)? Are “more of the same” okay even if they’re improved versions of older emitters? How many of the monthly emitters do you actually use? Do you ever analyze them to see how they do what they do, so that you will be better at creating your own? Do you find every library to be useful? Are there specific effects that you think we need more of? How often do you go back through older libraries, just browsing to rediscover some of the amazing emitters that we’ve already created?

Instead of making emitters, would our time be better spent creating tutorials that show you how to use these emitters more effectively, tweak them to fit your projects, modify them to create new versions?

As I said, so many questions. There *is* another library coming soon, half of it based on the scans that people provided me with months ago, and half created by Tom. Probably next week sometime, as I have some editing to do and very little time to do it right now.

The fact that the emitters display in the preview window of the emitter selection dialog means that you do have OpenGL support (GPU support is different), but must be missing some OpenGL feature that is required — the preview window has fewer requirements than the plug-in does in AE.

AE preferences should still tell you what OpenGL support you have, even if the GPU is not available. It may tell you that you have an NVIDIA chipset for instance, and then you could go to the NVIDIA website and download the latest drivers.

Try downloading the latest maintenance release (6.13):

    https://www.genarts.com/support/downloads/sapphire/final-cut

There are a few fixes related to the preset browser in that update. If you still have the problem after that, email support at genarts dot com and we’ll see what we can find out.

It must be an OpenGL issue. Do you have the latest drivers for your card? Go into the After Effects preferences and the page relating to OpenGL will tell you what your hardware is. You should go to the manufacturer’s website for an updated video driver.

If pI3 (standalone app) works for you, then you can load footage as reference, add your particle effects, then render just the particles with alpha channel. Then load that into AE as another footage layer.

Are you on Windows or Mac? On the Mac version of pIAE you need to click in the effect control window before the emitter selection dialog shows (as the text indicates).

To see how it should work, watch one of these videos:

    Win:

    Mac:

If it’s not working as it should, please contact support at genarts dot com.

December 19, 2012 at 5:04 pm in reply to: Keeping a particle in front.

Make it the top emitter on the layer (the last emitter added is on top).

Or create a new layer, and only add that emitter to it.
