[blackbanana] “Ok, I’ve been encountering 2 particular problems of late that I have not been able to solve. One, the RT playback error. I’ve switched from Unlimited, closed all other programs and processes, etc, but still get frequent RT playback stoppages on fully rendered timelines. “
Sounds like drive issues. Either they’re too slow or they’re too full. What kind of drive array are you running?
[blackbanana] “About 50% of the time, and getting more frequent, my layoffs end up being 1 frame late. Picture and audio are still in sync, but it’s always a single frame late, always occurring somewhere between my Bars & Tone and the slate.”
Are you manually inserting the Bars and Slate into your timeline or using the FCP features when you Edit to Tape? I always manually insert everything into my timeline and all seems well here with RS-422 control of either DigiBeta or BetaSP machines.
[blackbanana] “PS – Yet another oddity is unclean INSERT edits. I can drop a clip in just fine, but when it reaches it’s out-point, it leaves a hard, assemble-like cut with a time-code break. Anyone?”
FCP is not known for clean insert edits, at least not up till FCP 4.5. Hopefully 5 has addressed this issue.

I run any professional microphone into a Mackie 1202 Mixer and then run the “Tape Output” from the Mackie into the DSR-11 Audio Inputs.
I suppose you could plug in a PC Style mic or any mic with a mini pin connector to the Mac, launch FCP and engage the VO Tool. That should feed the audio directly out to your DSR-11 via Firewire. If not simply record the VO in FCP and then roll it out to tape.
Obviously, the better the mic and room, the better the sound.

April 19, 2005 at 11:54 am in reply to: Final Cut Studio – Ships: 4-6 weeks? really?[MitchJi] “Not good, we are setting up a new G5 and obvously don’t want to purchase and install the current SW. “
Well, if you just purchased a G5 I would have held off on that until at least today. When NAB approaches it usually means two things. Apple will update a lot of our software and it will be available soon. On Tuesday of NAB, Apple generally releases new hardware. Last year it was the new Powerbooks. We may not see anything today, but I have been holding off on all new hardware purchases until at least a week after NAB to see if Apple has anything to surprise with.
Pretty much anything that’s released at NAB (Apple or anyone else) is not available at the moment they debut it. You have to SHOW it at NAB if you want to make a splash, but not many people actually expect the product to be available. Look at the Panasonic HD Camera. They debuted it at the Apple Press Event but it will be available fourth quarter. Kind of disappointing with all the pre-show hype about it and the fact that a prototype was on display last year. But what are you going to do? If you really want it, you just wait for it.
As someone else noted, there is no “grandfather” clause that I’ve seen yet so if you purchase FCP 4.5 today, you’ll need to purchase the upgrade later.

[MitchJi] “Is it really 4-6 weeks?”
That’s what they said at the event and is what it says on the Apple Store.

[Winston A. Cely] “That sucks, cause I do multi-format projects every year, and needing to render those clips is a pain.”
Either purchase a CineWave or capture all the various formats to the same codec and same frame rate. I used to mix formats on my old CineWave’s but lately I’ll just bring everything in at the Kona 2 8 bit uncompressed setting and edit everything there.

This is a G4 Dual 533 that just updated to 10.3.9, no problems here. I’m using Safari.

[Walter Biscardi] “AND OS 10.3.9 (an OS specified by FCP 5) is not out yet”
Well, I take that back. OS 10.3.9 just showed up in my Software Update panel. I’m installing it on a non-FCP system right now.

[Noe Marti] “as long as you do not make heavy alterings or even chroma keys – yes. then DV or HDV may be usable…..But for most compositing work it is not.
I work with both: the low end stuff (dv/hdv) and digibeta/hdcam…..I can tell you the difference is incredible. I have pulled hundreds of dv based chroma keys: it is always a big pain….the same with hdv.”In your earlier post you said it’s not usable, now you say it’s not usable for Chroma Key. Two completely different things. DV is usable and airing every single day on US Broadcast networks. For Chroma Key it is terrible and makes a lot of work for the compositor, keyer to make it look clean.
But as far as color correcting and things like that, it’s totally usable in both corporate and broadcast so long as you use the High Precision YUV render settings in FCP. I too use DigiBeta, BetaSP, DV and HD material in my day to day work. As a pure video format, DV is great. For compositing, you just need to know to work with it to keep it clean.

[Steve Connor] “[Noe Marti] “HDV is not a usable format for professional postproduction”
Neither is DV, but is is extensively used around the world. “
Very true Steve. I know of entire television series and even some films that are shot with DV cameras like the Sony PD-150 and especially the Panasonic DVX-100A. Now for chroma key DV is definitely NOT the preferred format, but for straight video and image, DV is actually a very nice format. The real key in DV, and pretty much any other format, is the person running the camera and the lighting. Good D.P. and good lighting = excellent quality no matter the format.
I’m not a big fan of HDV and much prefer DVCPro HD as the compressed HD format of choice. But to say HDV is not a usable format is certainly far from the truth.

If you watch your timeline play out to an external monitor, you’ll know right away if the interlacing is set correctly.
