Posted by Mitchji on April 18, 2005 at 11:00 pmHi,
I thought this was available now.
Is it really 4-6 weeks?
Best Wishes,

That’s what they said at the event and is what it says on the Apple Store.

April 19, 2005 at 5:23 amThat’s usually how it works. Also gives time for 3rd party cards/software to get up to speed (capture cards, SCSI, Fibre plugins etc…).
If you run a full production suite, you have a LOT of extra tools that need to be compatible with Tiger and FCP5. Drivers and Firmware will need to be installed before you can use this stuff anyway. -

April 19, 2005 at 6:18 amYeah…stick with 10.3.8 and FCP4 for a little while. The last thing you want to do is install everything fresh only to find out your harddrives won’t work with the new configs. If you’re like most people, start visiting the websites of ALL your manufacturers and get a sense for what will be supported and when.
I’ve been doing this since FCP1, and I can tell you the average complete compatibility with software and hardware is 30-60days after a major upgrade is released…. then there is a period of time when bugs and other minor issues need fixing.
Good Luck.

April 19, 2005 at 8:29 amHi,
and by the way Apple is not offering a grand fathering period if you buy fcp 4.5..
meaning you would have to buy the upgrade to FCP5 if you buy FCP 4.5 now, which is quite strange
as Apple has always offered “up to date upgrades” programs.I hope they will change their mind on this one…

Well, if you just purchased a G5 I would have held off on that until at least today. When NAB approaches it usually means two things. Apple will update a lot of our software and it will be available soon. On Tuesday of NAB, Apple generally releases new hardware. Last year it was the new Powerbooks. We may not see anything today, but I have been holding off on all new hardware purchases until at least a week after NAB to see if Apple has anything to surprise with.
Pretty much anything that’s released at NAB (Apple or anyone else) is not available at the moment they debut it. You have to SHOW it at NAB if you want to make a splash, but not many people actually expect the product to be available. Look at the Panasonic HD Camera. They debuted it at the Apple Press Event but it will be available fourth quarter. Kind of disappointing with all the pre-show hype about it and the fact that a prototype was on display last year. But what are you going to do? If you really want it, you just wait for it.
As someone else noted, there is no “grandfather” clause that I’ve seen yet so if you purchase FCP 4.5 today, you’ll need to purchase the upgrade later.

However, the good news is, as found in this thread,
https://www.uemforums.com/2pop/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=87880&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#87880
Apple is going to be willing to take the “upgrade” on a case by case basis, so that those of us with multiple updates of FCP, DVDSP, and Motion will qualify for the $499 upgrade.
YAY.

Thanks for the information on the upgrade. I also own FCP 3, 4, 4.5, Soundtrack, DVD Studio Pro 2, 3 and Motion 1. I called the Apple Store, repeated the details you provided, and they gave me the $499 price and cancelled my $699 FCP Studio Pro 5 upgrade order.

April 19, 2005 at 8:05 pmYep, same here, just purchased the upgrade to the full studio for $499 and added a second complete studio package at the regular full price. Special thanks to Ned Soltz who brought this all up on the other forums.
