[Kevin J Railsback] ”
It’s the drives Apple’s putting in now. My G4 PB 1.67GHz came with Panther and burns DVD -R/RW and +R/RW’s. Upgrading to Tiger didn’t add this”Actually, I believe this IS a feature of Panther unlocking the +R / +RW capabilities in any SuperDrive machine, both old and new.

FCP 5 sounds like it will lean on the Graphics card much like Motion does right now so yes, the video card matters. I’m running the nVidia Ultra 6800 and Motion went from puttering along to giving me awesome realtime performance even in full resolution. You’ll see the same with FCP 5.

Use the Easy Setup and everything will be pre-set for you. That’s the easiest way.

May 1, 2005 at 9:34 am in reply to: Editing Native HDV in FCP 5? What do a need to get an HD signal out to an HD client monitor?I would guess you could use the camera depending on what kind of outputs it has and what kind of inputs the monitor has.
AJA has already announced that the Kona 2 will support FCP 5 when it’s released so I’m guessing it will support realtime playback of HDV to an external monitor like it support DVCPro HD realtime playback right now.

[Yervant] “I’d like to know what workaround there is to working on different sequences and slapping them onto an ongoing roughcut sequence without the roughcut being considered a nested sequence”
When you’re done with the individual sequences, just do a “Copy All” in the sequence and then “Paste” to your main rough cut sequence. This will bring the entire edited timeline into your rough cut without it being a nest.

[Oliver Peters] “I don’t know where the idea that only D5 is the delivery format came from. Probably more folks at any sort of network level want HDCAM than D5 and few, if any, take DVCProHD. “
From conversations I’ve had with folks delivering HD, D5 is big standard because it’s true uncompressed HD so many shows seem to be delivered on D5. We were actually surprised when we were told to deliver our series on HDCAM as we were expecting it to be D5. No biggy since we can convert it, but we were hoping to deliver on the D5 format since it’s uncompressed.

Interesting note from the Panasonic brochure:
The AJ-HD1200A can play back or record* up to 92 minutes of superiorquality HD footage on a single, compact 1/4″ DVCPRO HD L cassette (AJ-HP92ELG). *The AJ-HD1200A can record only when an optional board is mounted. Recording via HD-SDI (optional)
Add the optional AJ-YA120AG HD-SDI in/out and SD-SDI out board, and the AJ-HD1200A can provide HD recording (1080/59.94i, 1080/50i, or 720/59.94p) from HD-SDI input.
So according to their own brochure, you must have the HD-SDI board installed for recording to work on the deck. I have both the Firewire and HD-SDI boards on my machine so Edit to Tape works perfectly. If I’m reading this right, if don’t have the HD-SDI board installed on the deck, it’s a player only.

[gary adcock] “this deck will do insert and assemble edits but only via the optional SDI inputs, and then only at (1080/60i, 1080/59.94i, 1080/50i, 720/60P, 720/59.94P) “
Gary, I’ll test that out tomorrow to see if I can get an insert edit to go. I actually haven’t tried that because I usually just cut an entire show to tape. That will be cool if insert really does work.
Thanks for the tip and I’ll report back on this tomorrow. Do you own the deck too?

[Chris Poisson] “It seems simple enough on the front end if say, I’m upconverting SD anamorphic footage to HD and/or creating the files with graphics/After Effects or whatever, but what would I need on the back end to deliver the media? “
What we’re doing here is shooting / editing with the Varicam in the DVCPro HD codec. Then run the HD-SDI output of the Kona 2 through a Terranex to cross-convert to 1080i HDCAM. The Terranex is a requirement of the network so we don’t have a way around that.
What I have found is that laying back off to tape on the 1200A (DVCPro HD) via HD-SDI is pretty much a perfect digital clone of the edited sequence so if you want to lay back to DVCPro HD, you’re better off going HD-SDI into the deck rather than Firewire. Firewire works, but it does add more noise to the signal.
As soon as Kona 2 gets the 720 – 1080i cross-convert going, we’ll just purchase an HDCAM deck for deliverables here.

I’m in my shop right now laying off an Edit to Tape with absolutely ZERO issues, as I’ve not had any issues every in the past doing an Assemble edit to my 1200A either via Firewire control (which I’m testing now) or using RS-422 Control. Not really sure what’s going on with your client Bob or where you get your information from.
Currently I just tested Firewire Control with Video In on the 1200A set to Firewire In. Black the test tape for 10 seconds. Set an In Point in the Sequence at 10 seconds, set the In Point at 10 seconds on Edit to Tape, voila. I can also Edit to Tape with RS-422 control using the HD-SDI input.
Not sure where the rocket science is Bob, but for $32,000 I sure hope this deck can perform an Assemble Edit, and it does, perfectly.
