You can set up a DV timeline and have it play out in realtime via the Kona 2 card, but it’s still DV footage. So you can simply edit a DV project, then play it out directly via SDI, Component or Composite to the deck of your choice.

Kona 2 is an excellent choice to migrate from CineWave. I did it last year and it’s just a killer unit with added benefit of 10bit HD built on-board instead of having to purchase the extra BOB and being limited to 8bit HD.

  • I would call ProMax, http://www.promax.com for their phone number, and ask them. They have probably sold more FCP systems than anyone and would be most likely be able to help you find out if there is a solution.

I know that a solution exists to RAID a Firewire 800 array as I’ve done this with a LaCie card and it works very well with two FW 800 drives striped together.

May 4, 2005 at 1:09 am in reply to: automatic batch capture for mac

[klaus] “Does anyone know if there is a program out there for mac that, like Scenalyser for the PC, can do an automatic batch capture of a DV tape? “

Final Cut Pro can do an automatic batch capture of a tape. Just put it in, set the In Point for the beginning of the tape, set the Out Point for the end of the tape, and in Preferences, select “Make new Clip” on timecode break.

[klaus] “How about a program that automatically captures DV, converts to MPEG 2, and writes to your DVD burner, all in one step (essentially replicating the job of a DVD Recorder)? “

A DVD Recorder is much simpler for this.

You’re much better off using a hardware converter for this. Both BlackMagic and AJA make the converters. Also at least one model of the Decklink HD and the AJA Kona 2 feature on-board up and down conversion. I own the Kona 2 and it has a really nice up-converter built in. I also own the Panasonic 1200A DVCPro HD deck which does an even better up conversion internally.

Boris Continuum Complete is the one I recommend to everyone with an NLE. It’s a great “swiss army knife” of plug-ins from film looks, to glows, to shines to a lot of really nice generators like snow and fire.

Look at Graeme Nattress’s plug-ins as well. It seems like everytime has a need on these forums, he comes up with the plug-in about 2 hours later. And he’s a heckuva nice guy too.

[walter biscardi] “I’m going to contact my Panasonic Rep to see if there will be any kind of firmware update that will allow Edit to Tape to function with RS-422. “

Just heard back from Panasonic and the answer is the 1200A only has one set of electronics so there is no RS-422 Editing capabilities. Don’t ask me what that means “one set of electronics” because he didn’t eleborate. So it’s crash record only unless you use Firewire Control from Final Cut Pro to do an Assemble Edit. But there are absolutely no Insert editing capabilities.

So I’ve just run off RS-422 to capture from the deck, but obviously, I was in Firewire control when laying back.

  • [Jerry Hofmann] “Not a fan of the Dazzle, “

Not a big fan either. I’d look at the Canopus AVDC-100 instead. That being said, follow the rest of Jerry’s suggestions about removing the box and trying just the camera. Also his note on only having one Firewire video / audio device connected at any one time.

[Oliver Peters] “Which codec inside FCP?”

DVCPro HD all the way through. I agree that Firewire should be a lossless clone, we’re just not seeing that here with our deck and our lay-offs. I’ve had a client look at the resulting master along with an engineer and HD editor at the facility where our show is mastered and all agree, the HD-SDI recording is signficantly cleaner than the Firewire recording.

May 2, 2005 at 2:35 pm in reply to: Kona 2 edit to tape with AJ-HD1200A issue

[Walter Biscardi] “I’ve not had any issues every in the past doing an Assemble edit to my 1200A either via Firewire control (which I’m testing now) or using RS-422 Control.”

Let me correct this statement Bob. I’ve just run more tests down here and RS-422 Control does not work for “Edit to Tape.” It is a Playback only control. I have just sent off an email to my Panasonic Rep to find out if Panasonic plans to release a Firmware Update for RS-422 control during recording.

[JeremyG] “I’ll add in 10 bucks to double it. $20 anyone? Has to be HD-SDI in and RS-422 deck control. I know it can do the weird firewire 7 frame preroll edit.”

Well, here’s what i have working here with my deck:

Firewire DVCPro HD Control > Firewire Input to the Deck: Edit to Tape works perfectly.

Firewire DVCPro HD Control > HD-SDI Input to the Deck: Edit to Tape works perfectly.

RS-422 Control > any input: Edit to Tape does not work. In fact, this morning FCP simply crashes everytime I launch with RS-422 selected as the control device.

So RS-422 works fine for capture, but it appears that Firewire DVCPro HD control is the only control setting that works with Edit to Tape right now on the 1200A. I’m going to contact my Panasonic Rep to see if there will be any kind of firmware update that will allow Edit to Tape to function with RS-422.
