FCP 5 doesn’t ship till later this month, so at the moment FCP 5 is comopletely bug free.
Is your boss hearing this from a competitor maybe? Kind of hard to say a product is buggy when it’s not even been released yet.

Very cool for sure and a nice evolution from the BDE’s. The temperature controlled fan is a nice touch too, though as I noted in an earlier post, my BDE’s haven’t had any temperature issues at all.

Yes it’s nice to save money, but storage is one area where I don’t skimp on quality for the sake of getting a few extra GB of space.
I’ve used Medea arrays for something like 8 years now and have never missed a deadline due to a drive related failure. In fact I’ve had individual drives fail in an array, but have still been able to finish a project while waiting for a new array to arrive from Medea. The products cost more, but they’re very reliable. Same with the LaCie’s I’ve been running for the past year in our second suite. Very stable, very reliable.
Best of luck in your decision, but be sure you’re completely comfortable with any solution that you go with.

No, this applies to any timecode break. Basically FCP looks at the TC where you start capturing and as soon as the TC jumps to something else, capture will stop, FCP will back up the tape machine to the TC break and resume the capture as a new clip.

Color Finesse is not realtime on FCP. Only the FCP based Color Correctors are realtime if your system is fast enough.
As for getting the most performance, you need the fastest of everything to get the most realtime. This includes the drives. I run FW800 RAID arrays and Fibrechannel Arrays here with anywhere from 100 – 325mb/sec and more so I get a ton of realtime here with my Dual 2.0 machines.

Rick I would suggest you either read the manual or pick up one of the FCP training manuals because just about everything you’re asking for is built in to FCP, you just need to either look them up in the Help window or in the manual.

I have a set of BDE’s (two 500GB units) that work perfectly fine going on 14 months now. In fact I’ve recommended the BDE’s to quite a few folks and they all seem to love them. No heat issues, no issues whatsoever and that’s running both 8bit and 10bit SD. In fact I’ve recommended them to quite a few of my colleagues and they love them too.
Paul, there’s a lot of folks who like to throw out blanket statements like Bob’s which might apply to some units but not all. LaCie seems to take the brunt of most folks because they actually have more units out there than just about anyone else. LaCie has great tech support and I have not had any projects miss a deadline due to a drive failure. We’re running the drives with our Aurora PipePro system right now and they run like a champ.
I’ll be testing their new SATA array very shortly for a review.

Easy Setup: AJA DVCPro HD 59.94
Change Device control to: DVCPro HD Firewire
Launch Edit to Tape
Assemble Edit should now work.
How accurate is it? It seems to be mighty close to dead on, surely within a few frames.

Really have nothing to add except to say my system is running perfectly with 10.3.8 and since Tiger is already here, I’m not updating anything until I’m ready to move to Tiger. Too many deadlines, no time for downtime, so since it’s working, I ain’t fixing it. 🙂

You really want a minimum 150mb/sec drive speed for uncompressed 8bit or 10bit capture. But much faster is better. My FCR2X fibrechannel array from Medea runs 325mb/sec or faster and it rocks with uncompressed HD.
