    May 6, 2005 at 12:18 pm in reply to: Considering K2 card…

K2 drivers are now up to offering the 2YUV codec (or is it YUV2?) which is supposed to allow Kona 2 to play footage captured on either the DL or CineWave card. Also, K2 can now perform SD to HD upconverts as well as downconverts via the card.

Beyond that, I’m not really sure what the differences are. The K2 running in my system now has been pretty rock solid since it was installed right after Christmas. I replaced my CineWave with the K2 and it’s been a good move over here as we migrate to more and more HD post.

May 6, 2005 at 12:15 pm in reply to: Do you need Kona2 for DVCPROHD or IO is good?

Varicam footage IS DVCPro HD so whether you come in Firewire or SDI, it’s the same quality.

HDCAM is more of an uncompressed format, though not totallly, it’s something like 3:1 compressed but generally you capture that at native 1080i uncompressed.

The Kona 2 features both upconversion (SD to HD) and downconversion (HD to SD) on the card which is fantastic when you’re working with the SD formats as you note. Really what I would do in your situation since it’s all SD material, is capture it at 8 or 10 bit uncompressed SD, edit the piece, then use the Kona 2 to upconvert the material to HD.

Or, you can simply capture in DVCPro 50 which is a much better format than DV or DVCAM for graphics and just stay in the SD world which I’m pretty sure you can do with the Io.

May 6, 2005 at 12:10 pm in reply to: can compressor create wmv files?

Flip 4 Mac makes a very simple, very inexpensive WMV compressor. Also, Sorenson Squeeze 4 is outstanding, though I’m not sure if the Mac version make’s wmv’s. I know the Windows version does.

  • Definitely worth a read. I purchased the full set of these about a month ago and have been using them almost everyday for either FCP or After Effects projects. They’re just fantastic and a real nice addition to Motion’s built in particles.

May 5, 2005 at 2:37 pm in reply to: Kona2 “capture now” max duration

Technically you can capture as long as your drives have media. Crashing after 20 minutes is not necessarily a problem with CineWave, it’s more likely something in your overall setup. Are you running all the correct driver / firmware combinations with the OS you’re running?

I’ve captured 20 minutes with no problems here, though I don’t do ‘uncontrollable device’ all that much. I saw this past weekend that Fox is using FCP to cut all the “going to break” music videos during their NASCAR coverage (in HD) so I’m assuming that they’re using the uncontrollable device thing to capture on the fly with no issues.

Do you have a local VAR with a Kona 2 where you can do a test capture as a test?

May 5, 2005 at 2:21 pm in reply to: Download Cinewave codecs?

[Tom Matthies] “My question. Can I just download the drivers/codecs from the cinewave website, install them and then play the files back? Could it be that simple? “

Last I looked, Pinnacle had not put their CineWave codecs on the website. You need to ask the editor that the project came from to email you the CineWave quicktime Components.

I’m not sure you’ll be able to play the files in realtime on your Io system. I know we’re supposed to be able to play them in realtime on a Kona 2 using the 2YUV codec as the system setup.

Words of wisdom to be sure. I never use a drive on any of my machines fresh out of the box without first formatting it. It’s quick and painless and saves the potential for a lot of pain later.
