I appreciate Walter’s efforts on this subject, and Walter’s finally specifying that we CANNOT
do an Assemble Edit to Tape with HDSDI (from the Kona 2). The confusion created by –

Not sure where the rocket science is Bob, but for $32,000 I sure hope this deck can perform an Assemble Edit, and it does, perfectly.

Again, I appreciate your efforts in this question, and for the clarification.

Subject: Re: Panasonic AJ-HD1200A assemble edit ?

    Bob et al:

The 1200A deck CANNOT perform ANY edit function, sorry to be rude (block caps) but this is a recurring issue. Editing on tape requires very specific hardware issues such as flying erase heads, servo offsets etc. Just because you can “crash” record into a tape doesn’t mean it is an edit. If you recorded the tape into which you “crash recorded” (same VTR used for both fuctions), you will have some semblence of format integrity. However if you try to “edit” into any other tape, chances are that you may get high errors, concealments, and servo unlocks at each edit point. Your client won’t like that….! Bad ju-ju….

Please, for the 483rd time, the 1200A doesn’t, can’t and never will edit!

    Rant over…. Argh!

    Hi Bob,

Sorry to say, and contrary to what others say, the AJ-HD1200A will NOT assemble edit. Try as they might, it is neither frame accurate or capable to sync up to an editing system. I have been told by many that the way to get back to the machine from FCP HD is to “Print to Tape”. But unfortunately until Apple supports TC back to the VTR, you can only “crash” record hoping to get close to TC 1:00:00:00.

You may want to contact Apple directly or go to a chat room like Creative Cow.net.

    Thanks for asking.

    Bob,

I have declared the winner’s of my $10 1200A mystery lottery this week.

It is a tie between Walter and yourself. So since I can not exceed my ten dollar budget I will instead offer both of you discount lunch coupons at Sizzler’s.

The two of you can have a nice sit down lunch and discuss the merits and issues of why the deck can’t do assemble edits.

I am sorry but airfare, hotel and car rental are not included in this deal.

Bob, if you’re ever in Atlanta, feel free to stop by and we’ll test this together and I’ll show you my particular 1200A perform an Assemble Edit to Tape via Firewire control.

    Again, these are my settings:

Easy Setup: AJA DVCPro HD 59.94

Change Device control to: DVCPro HD Firewire

    Launch Edit to Tape

    Assemble Edit should now work.

How accurate is it? It seems to be mighty close to dead on, surely within a few frames.

Try unplugging your HD-SDI cable when you do this (or running a different signal to the HD-SDI than the Firewire). My understanding is that once you set the device control to Firewire HD the deck looks for the video signal through the Firewire port. So even though you think the video is coming in through the HD-SDI, it is actually coming in through Firewire. I can’t test this myself, but that is how it was explained to me.
