I will keep you posted. “Just FYI, I’m holding off on the Tiger upgrade until FCP 5 is released. Since FCP 4.5 is running very well on 10.3.8 on both of my systems, I’m not going to “fix anything that’s not broke.” FCP 5 is pretty much optimized for Tiger, FCP 4 was optimized for Panther so I’ll just hold off on everything until then. Also, this gives time for third party manufacturers like Medea to really test Tiger before I make the switch with FCP 5.

8bit uncompressed is generally 20mb/sec while 10bit uncompressed is around 30-40mb/sec. You can figure the per frame rate from there.

From what I understand, the 6800 is the fastest nVidia you can run.
But if you want to go for third party realtime color correction like Final Touch HD, then you need to run an ATI card, preferrably the x800.

Apple was running 8 streams of DVCPro HD material from what I understand at their NAB show using their new Dynamic Realtime feature of FCP 5. Basically, FCP will automatically scale down the resolution of the footage to allow more streams of RT.
As for true to life HD performance, I’m easily running full 1080i uncompressed HD with my Medea FCR2X Fibrechannel array here and will be adding some realtime color correction tools via Final Touch HD in the next few weeks.
With FCP everything really does depend on your actual setup as to how much realtime you’ll get. Everyone here seems to measure RT by how many streams of video you can run which to me is quite silly. Since I’m not cutting the Brady Bunch open anytime soon, as long as I get two streams of video with two or three streams of graphics I’m really happy. I’m much more concerned with how many filters and effects I can stack up in realtime.

Nope, everything seems to be pretty rock solid here. I run very short audio cables, just three feet between everything.

Scott, you’re making the right choice moving from CineWave to the K2. I added an M-Audio Flying Cow A/D audio converter for the occassional analog audio I need to get into the K2. I run the output from my Mackie 1202 directly to the Flying Cow and that feeds AES to the K2. I also run the AES output from the K2 through the Flying Cow for playback in the suite. But from both AJA and other users I’ve heard the Io plays very nicely with the Kona 2.
Just FYI, I run all my Beta tapes via my Sony J3/902 player deck which plays all formats of Beta via SDI so I can play out my BetaSP material via SDI directly in to the K2. I have to say, the BetaSP looks better coming down the SDI than it ever did via Component. It’s a player only, but it’s been a great investement for our company.

Whenever making a complete OS upgrade, you should always at least do the Archive and Install, though the Erase and Install is really the best way to do a proper upgrade. Just upgrading on top of the old OS is generally asking for problems.

It’s perfect for rough cutting. Just tell him to get the 14″ version, the 12″ is really really small for even simple editing on FCP.
