I am planning to abandon my CineWave shortly, and it looks like the K2 is going to be the way to go. The Decklink “Multibridge” looks cool, but I may not want to wait until late summer.

I’ll still need to access beta SP footage regularly, so I guess my choices are adding A to D converters for video and audio, or getting a AJA IO/la and run it off the firewire bus. Can anyone weigh in on the “real-world” applications of converters versus an IOla playing nicely with the Kona2 on the same G5?

IO works nicely and plays well with kona. the converters work too. depends what you personally like.

Scott, you’re making the right choice moving from CineWave to the K2. I added an M-Audio Flying Cow A/D audio converter for the occassional analog audio I need to get into the K2. I run the output from my Mackie 1202 directly to the Flying Cow and that feeds AES to the K2. I also run the AES output from the K2 through the Flying Cow for playback in the suite. But from both AJA and other users I’ve heard the Io plays very nicely with the Kona 2.

Just FYI, I run all my Beta tapes via my Sony J3/902 player deck which plays all formats of Beta via SDI so I can play out my BetaSP material via SDI directly in to the K2. I have to say, the BetaSP looks better coming down the SDI than it ever did via Component. It’s a player only, but it’s been a great investement for our company.

So what your saying is, use the IO as the A to D converter, edit using the Kona 2 then output back thru the IO? For Analog that is.

Hey Walter, It’s nice to see alot of the old CineWane(sic) community hanging out over here.

Have you seen any audio/video sync issues going through the converters?

you do not have to use the IO to output. the kona 2 actually lays off analog, it is just the ingest that needs to be SDI–with dual link, there is not enough room on a PCI card to have anything else in the back of it other than the two HD/SDI. that will let you uprez SD analog if you set up the IO in front of the kona.

[Scott Shucher] “Have you seen any audio/video sync issues going through the converters?”

Nope, everything seems to be pretty rock solid here. I run very short audio cables, just three feet between everything.
