  • Will an ibook be good for simple cut only editing?

I have a friend who is a producer/writer for short and long-form commercials. He needs to use FCP to do very simple editing. I plan to log and digitize the footage on a G5 dual 2.7 (crossing my fingers for the budget to go through) then using FCP, “create offline footage” to create lo-res files. Then burn those onto DVD-R or another external drive, then ship it to him so he can do some cutting for story, then send back the project file to me. I wish to open his project file, relink the media to the full uncompressed media, then finish the commercials. Will this method work with 2 FCP systems? Will he be able to do what he needs on an ibook? I’m sure at some point we will get into HDV and HD footage, but he will always be working from low res files on the ibook, preferably on the internal drive.

I know the ibook will not be a dream for editing and graphics and HD…, but that’s just not what he needs to do. He isn’t an editor and will never be. He just wants to be able to do rough editing, then pass off the job to me and a G5. The mini isn’t an option, nor is an imac. He has to be very portable.

    Thanks,
    Gary

    Yes.

I have an iBook 500Mhz with FCP 3 on it, and I used it to cut a TV pilot, several short films, a behind the scenes video of a TV movie, and news footage for a feature film (which I also incorporated After Effects).

Keep it simple and it will work fine.

It’s perfect for rough cutting. Just tell him to get the 14″ version, the 12″ is really really small for even simple editing on FCP.
