HD and SD compromise?
Posted by Otis F on May 6, 2005 at 1:37 pmHello,
We are a small UK based production company about to upgrade one of our old Avid MC. We already have a FCP HD suite built on a Cinewave card (purchased only 6 months ago and already obsolete-never mind). Most of our work is still acquired on DigiBeta, but we are about to get a Sony Z1 to replace our in house PD150. We have also shot footage on a Varicam which needs to be edited. As yet we have no need for full HD capability; therefore we don

May 6, 2005 at 2:21 pm[Otis F] “I know the Kona 2 will output DVCPRO HD, but will it also output a native HDV programme. “
FCP will support HDV natively when FCP 5 ships in June and AJA announced that Kona 2 will support FCP 5 when it ships. So I would expect that the K2 will allow for realtime output of HDV material to a monitor / deck like it does now with DVCPro HD.
[Otis F] “We will get the latest offering from Apple in the form of a Dual 2.7 GHz Power Mac G5; 4 GB DDR400 SDRAM; 2 x 400GB Serial ATA; NVIDIA GeoForce 6800 Ultra DDL. “
Honestly, I did not purchase that machine because I found it a bit of a waste at $3,000 for a very small speed bump from the Dual 2.5. I went with an original Dual 2.0, loaded up with 4GB RAM and a new 20″ Cinema Display for about the same price. So I have two identical machines, both running SD / HD just fine. I’m waiting for the Dual Core processing machines to come out before I step up any further.
On the nVidia 6800 Ultra, that’s the card I have in one of my Dual 2.0’s but I’m going to put the ATI x800 into the second G5 as I plan to add Final Touch HD shortly for realtime color correcting. That software will not even install without the ATI card in the machine, so if you want to get into something like that later, it’s something to consider.
G-Tech and LaCie are both great choices for the external FW drives. I’ve cut DVCPro HD on both along with 8bit and 10bit SD. Great products.

May 6, 2005 at 2:56 pmCheers Walter for your swifty response, though I’ve come to expect nothing less from you.
What benefits will we see with the Dual Core processing machines, and what exactly is dual core? As for the ATI x800, how much is this card, it doesn’t appear to be an option on the UK Apple Store.
Thanks again and good luck with your film.

About the same price, if not a little cheaper, than the Ultra 6800. Around $500 US.
As for the Dual Core, I’m sure others are better equipped to explain the differences, but in short, they will be a much faster architecture than the current lineup of G5’s. Moving from a current Dual 2.0 G5 to a 2.7 G5 is not enough to justify a $3,000 (US) investment in a machine. If I was moving from a G4, then maybe.

May 6, 2005 at 5:09 pmOtis, just got this note from AJA regarding HDV:
…yes, K2 will support playback of HDV, and we even hardware-accelerate it, as we do DVCPRO-HD! Plus, we hardware accelerate Dynamic RT Extreme as well…very cool.
so there you go, you’re all set with HDV and DVCPro HD.

The ATI 9650 256MB card that comes standard with the new dual 2.7Ghz G5 has one single link DVI and one dual link DVI so you can hook up a 23″ and a 30″ Cinema Display with this card. But if you need more juices, then the NVIDIA 6800Ultra is the way to go but it eats up the next PCI slot because of the fan. If you need a 512MB card that can support the 23″ and 30″ Cinema Display and does not eat up a PCI slot, then go with the ATI X800XT card. Also, if you intend to get the FinalTouch color correction software as Wally mentioned, you will need to stick with ATI cards, so the X800XT is probably your best option. To lose a PCI slot on the G5 can be an issue for some people.
Also, AJA has a HD to DVI converter called the HDP (https://www.aja.com/hdp.htm) which features hardware scaling to take care of the 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio. If you need to connect to 4 DVI displays, they have a new one called HDP4 (https://www.aja.com/hdp4.htm).
But all in all, Kona 2 is a fantastic product.
