Definitely an Adobe thing because with After Effects it gives you a selection of options depending on what’s installed on the machine and I use the K2 for all my video previews on that both in SD and HD. With CS 2 it only gives me a Firewire option.

Doesn’t work yet. I just tried it, Firewire is the only option with CS2.
But I just drag the image over to my broadcast monitor and view it like that. Yeah, it would be nice to have the continuous video preview like After Effects and I’m sure AJA and Adobe can get it where the Kona 2 can provide the same continuous video preview updates like AE. But it’s not that much of a big deal to drag the image over to the monitor and check it.

If you’ve never built one before, certainly contact a VAR or manufacturer of RAID’s such as Medea. There are folks on these forums who like to build JBOD’s (Just a Bunch of Drives) in an enclosure, but I’ve never been a big fan of those. I’d rather pay the extra money and get some quality and support from folks like Medea. For SCSI or Fibrechannel RAID’s those are going to be the most expensive, but also the fastest out there. My Medea FCR2X (Fibrechannel) runs at 325mb/sec + with 2TB of Storage coming in around $8,000 or so, plus $500 for the Fibrechannel card in my G5.
You can also go with Firewire 800 RAID’s which are far cheaper, but slower. They are great for up to 10bit uncompressed standard definition. I’m running both LaCie Big Disk Extremes and the G-Tech G-RAID units here and they both work great. Prices depend on how much storage you need. If you add a second FW-800 card to your G5, you can increase the speeds of the FW800’s by striping two units together.
I just received a LaCie Biggest Disk F800 which is four drives striped together in a 1.6 TB Firewire 800 array. I’ll be writing a review on that shortly (along with several other reviews I owe the Cow!) so give me a few weeks to play with all this stuff and I’ll let you know how that performs.

And just as a caveat to this, in you update to 9.0.2, and you’re running Expander 9.0 or earlier, you need to download the FULL version, not the upgrade. The upgrade will only work if you’re running 9.0.1 as stated on their website.

If you’re cutting with Final Cut Pro, check out Jerry Hofmann’s book on editing with FCP 4. He gives as much instruction on the “why” you’re making the edit as he does on the technical info about the program.
You essentially cut a short film along with Jerry and it’s a very good all around editing book.

Depends on how much footage you have and how long you have to allow for the rendering. As noted above, the Kona and Decklink cards perform realtime downconvert and as an onwer of the Kona 2 I can tell you the quality is oustanding. The K2 now has on-board upconvert as well which looks very good too in case you have to mix SD with Varicam footage.

Yep, John you’re right and Bob is wrong. I downloaded the free stuffit expander yesterday (version 9.0.2) and it’s running fine with Tiger on my laptop. So really there’s no need to switch over to zip files unless AJA wants to.
