Viewing photoshop through Kona2
Posted by Ron Frank on May 9, 2005 at 3:06 pmI recently switched one of my CineWave systems to Kona2 and have been quite happy with both the transition ease and the quality. I’m still trying to figure out all of the little nuances. Is it possible to work in Photoshop and output the active project window through Kona2 so that I can make adjustments based on the NTSC monitor? This is an option with AE, but I don’t see anything with Photoshop CS (v.8).
Thanks,
Ron Frank

May 9, 2005 at 3:40 pmWith the K2 your video output is an extra monitor unless used by an application that takes video out. Just drag your Photoshop file over (wherever you have placed your monitor) and it will be displayed. You can also just drag a portion of the image onto the monitor and used one of the Photoshop view modes (not exactly sure if that is what they are really called, but it is the left most button on the bottom of the tool bar) and you will get your image on the monitor.

May 9, 2005 at 3:50 pmIf I’m not mistaken, CS2 supports video out, but I’m not sure of the limitations of this. Or do as Jared says and use the Kona2’s extended desktop feature.

May 9, 2005 at 3:57 pmWOW! For a moment I thought it was to good to be true, but this is from Adobes site.
Instant video preview
See your broadcast graphics as they’ll appear to the audience, while you’re still building them. With one click, you can use an IEEE 1394 connection to preview your images on a television monitor.Don’t know how it will work with the Kona, but I bet it will. Now I guess I have to upgrade to CS 2.

May 9, 2005 at 4:03 pmSee, I has a hunch it was only supported through a firewire connection, but perhaps companies like AJA can tap into that functionality making it possible to view photoshop out of their hardware. The future is now.

Doesn’t work yet. I just tried it, Firewire is the only option with CS2.
But I just drag the image over to my broadcast monitor and view it like that. Yeah, it would be nice to have the continuous video preview like After Effects and I’m sure AJA and Adobe can get it where the Kona 2 can provide the same continuous video preview updates like AE. But it’s not that much of a big deal to drag the image over to the monitor and check it.

May 9, 2005 at 4:29 pmThat sucks! I was really hopping that maybe other video outputs would be supported. Maybe I don’t have to upgrade yet then. Or maybe AJA will tap into it, that would be great.

Definitely an Adobe thing because with After Effects it gives you a selection of options depending on what’s installed on the machine and I use the K2 for all my video previews on that both in SD and HD. With CS 2 it only gives me a Firewire option.
