  • BEST method for software down conversion

What is the best method for *software* down conversion from DVCPRO HD to SD DV? I have a Mac, Final Cut Pro, and Compressor.

My first thought is to just use Batch Export in Final Cut Pro. This keeps time code too right?

    Thanks,

In my experience the software downconversions look terrible. I’ve tried both FCP and AE (AE’s being the slightly better looking downconversion). I’ve found that using a 1200A with SDI to a DV deck with SDI yields the best results. You can have the TC synched so that if you ever want to master from the HD you can. Downside is the cost of the dubs.

Thanks for the good info, I just met the FCP team from Apple last night. They said the new version of Compressor coming with FCP5 would do “very high-end” conversions, both format like PAL to NTSC and HD down or up conversion. this was sort of an acknowledgment that it was not “High-end” before. They were very proud of the new conversion tool and mentioned it a number of times to make sure we understood that it was completely different now.

If this is true; great. I still think hardware downconverisons will yield better and faster results than Compressor.

If yo have a G5, get yourself a Kona2 and bring the HD-SDI in to do a realtime down conversion to SD or DV or whatever you want. then all you have to do is set your settings up for HD, redigitize, and you are ready for your online.

Yes, im familiar with the Kona and BM cards. I was wandering about software methods. I think the new version of Compressor coming out might do the trick.

Depends on how much footage you have and how long you have to allow for the rendering. As noted above, the Kona and Decklink cards perform realtime downconvert and as an onwer of the Kona 2 I can tell you the quality is oustanding. The K2 now has on-board upconvert as well which looks very good too in case you have to mix SD with Varicam footage.
