[gary adcock] “remember that the flagged frames will always convert to 23.98 (24p) when using the Frame Rate Converter’s (either software or hardware) it is a function of how it works — it always converts the flagged frames for a 23.98 timeline.”
Thanks Gary! I’m such a bonehead, totally forgot about the Frame Rate Converter being needed for things other than the standard 24fps. I got spoiled by FCP automatically pulling the 24p out of the DVCPro HD tapes.
Good to see you over here!

[hector] “I was wondering if there any realtime cards for FCP or have the G5’s outperformed these types of cards.”
CineWave is really the only card out there that adds additional RT above what FCP offers, but it’s on the way out and I would not recommend purchasing one at this time.
For DV only, no card will accelerate anything beyond the fastest harddrives. The more speed out of the drives, the more RT. For instance, my Fibrechannel FCR2X from Medea tops out over 350MB/sec on the read speeds so I get a LOT of RT with those.

[Fred Connors Jr] “Why are the option board(s) so expensive?”
Not sure. I have the 1200A with all options installed and it came to just under $32k
[Fred Connors Jr] “How do you adjust the Video playback levels?
How do you adjust the Audio playback levels?”
With your NLE or Color Correction software. Firewire and SDI are digital transfers between the deck and NLE so your changes are made in the software. In my case, I edit with Final Cut Pro and I’m getting Final Touch HD for color correction.
[Fred Connors Jr] “Is anyone using a “Legalizer” for SD broadcast safe levels?”
Use scopes with any NLE system and you should be good to go there. Just use your color correction filters in your NLE to adjust levels as necessary. FCP has a “broadcast safe” filter but I don’t use it. I just use the on-board color correctors to dial in the levels.

Stack them up on video tracks above each other. If they fill the frame, you need to scale them down to continue to see what’s below.

[mus man] “I changed my sequence settings to NTSC DV/DVC Pro 23.98, dropped a clip onto the timeline, and was greeted with the red line that means rendering is necessary. I tried opening new sequences and repeating the process, but FCP always needed to render for playback.
I tried making a custom setting of 720×486 (rather than 720×480) as the digibeta is 486. Still FCP needed to render for playback.”I think your settings are still wrong in your Sequence. First off, DV25 is a 720×480 frame size, not 486. Also, verify your frame rate to ensure that you’re set right.
Go into the Browser and look at all the details of your clips. Frame Size and fps especially. Then set a Sequence to exactly match those settings. It will most likly be DV at 24fps.
Your system should play this back no problem, you just need to get the Sequence settings to exactly match the clips. Also, when you change your Sequence Settings, you need to remove all the clips from the timeline and re-insert them. They will not suddenly change from red to green if they’re in the timeline when you make the change. Not sure why, but they don’t.

[Rainer Wirth] “Your system is too slow, it’s just for DV codec. DVCPro is around 3,6 Mb/s, Dv is 3.0 Mb/s. So you have to render.”
DV and DVCPro will both playback on his system, especially since he’s using the Big Disk Extreme which can easily playback 8bit and even 10bit material.

Sounds like your audio output is set to “Built In Audio” rather than whatever device you’re using to feed your video monitor. Audio and Video must come from the same source to be in sync.
You can also use your “Playback Offset” to change this. Default is four frames. I always need to reset this to Zero whenever I trash prefs to ensure that the audio from the Kona 2 is in sync.

Did you do an upgrade or a clean install of everything? So far I’ve upgraded one of my two systems and I start from scratch with each new OS. Completely erased the harddrive, installed Tiger, ran all the updates, installed FCP Studio, ran the updates, installed After Effects, ran the updates, etc…..and repeated this patter for each piece of software on the system. So far so good. But I plan to test this system out for at least a month before installing everything on my primary Kona 2 HD system.
If you simply upgraded your OS and/or FCP, you’re bound to run into a lot of issues. Some minor, some major.

[Rich Rubasch] “Walter…why did you replace the Point 7s? I’m a big fan of them. Is it because they are not powered? What connnectors are on the KRKs?”
Better, more true sound on the KRK’s. The Alesis were actually a bit too flat with not enough on the low end. I was missing some muddiness in some VO’s. With the KRK’s I’m hearing more on the low end and it helps me hear and fix muddiness with some VO’s.
KRK’s are self powered so I don’t need the amp anymore. 1/4″, XLR, RCA on the KRK’s. I run 1/4″ out of a Mackie 1202 to mine.
