Baby Mackies
Posted by Cameracad on May 30, 2005 at 7:15 pmDoes anyone have an opinion on the Mackie Tapco S5’s? They’re around $300 a pair. That sure beats the $1000 or better for the Big Macs (HR 824s)

May 30, 2005 at 7:40 pmDon’t know about the Mackies, but I got some KRK Rokit5s for the same price and they are kick-ass bigtime.

Dude, I was just going to say the same thing. I replaced my Alesis Point Sevens with a pair of these KRK’s and they just awesome! I’m going to put them into my second suite shortly as well. Got them at Guitar Center here in Atlanta and you can find them at http://www.musiciansfriend as well.

May 30, 2005 at 9:35 pmWalter…why did you replace the Point 7s? I’m a big fan of them. Is it because they are not powered? What connnectors are on the KRKs?

Better, more true sound on the KRK’s. The Alesis were actually a bit too flat with not enough on the low end. I was missing some muddiness in some VO’s. With the KRK’s I’m hearing more on the low end and it helps me hear and fix muddiness with some VO’s.
KRK’s are self powered so I don’t need the amp anymore. 1/4″, XLR, RCA on the KRK’s. I run 1/4″ out of a Mackie 1202 to mine.

May 30, 2005 at 11:06 pmHey Walt,
What a hoot, I bought mine at Guitar Center in Tempe. The KRK V4s are even more awesome. A little more expensive, but I got a pair for $420 at fullcompass.com for my other system.

May 30, 2005 at 11:10 pmJust thought of this, but KRK probably stands for “killer, really killer.”

May 30, 2005 at 11:43 pmI tested out all the Mackies and other brands as well. My final choice was to go with the HR 824’s.
They are just great, awesome sound quality and reproduction and well worth what I paid for them. Buy them for B&H for a good deal.

May 31, 2005 at 12:38 amI have these:
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/fg=101/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/603273/
and love them. As Walter mentioned, getting a nice bass response is crucial, especially if you are making videos to be shown to big rooms.
You might be able to find a better price if you do some searching online. They have them at guitar center (at least in Chicago they do) if you want to check them out.

May 31, 2005 at 1:39 amDear Cameracad,
We’re using the Tapco’s on approximately 40 of our edit systems. Speakers are rather subjective, so I’m sure you can get into audiophile geek speak about subtle nuances, but for us, in an off-line environment they work just fine. They provide enough clarity and punch for the relatively small rooms that they live in. Any louder and the neighbors complain.
They’re a good value for the price.
