  • why can’t fcp play this back w/o rendering?

Posted by Samuel Frazier on May 31, 2005 at 8:29 am

I have a film originated project that I had transfered to digibeta and captured 10 bit uncompressed on a friend’s G5. I took those files and used Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown, then used the media manager to make DV25 copies of the files.
I changed my sequence settings to NTSC DV/DVC Pro 23.98, dropped a clip onto the timeline, and was greeted with the red line that means rendering is necessary. I tried opening new sequences and repeating the process, but FCP always needed to render for playback.
I tried making a custom setting of 720×486 (rather than 720×480) as the digibeta is 486. Still FCP needed to render for playback. Tried also making the playback quality low, but still no playback.
I know my system is meager (Mac Mini 1.42, 1 gig ram, Acom and Lacie Big Disk Extreme external firewire drives daisy chained together), but I would have thought this would be within its reach.
Just wondering if this is too much for my system, or if I have something set wrong that is killing my performance. Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Your system is too slow, it’s just for DV codec. DVCPro is around 3,6 Mb/s, Dv is 3.0 Mb/s. So you have to render. Set your files and your sequence to DV. With no layer your system should handle the files without rendering. Otherwise you need a raid. But on a minimac I don’t know whether you can handle a raid.

DV and DVCPro will both playback on his system, especially since he’s using the Big Disk Extreme which can easily playback 8bit and even 10bit material.

I think your settings are still wrong in your Sequence. First off, DV25 is a 720×480 frame size, not 486. Also, verify your frame rate to ensure that you’re set right.

Go into the Browser and look at all the details of your clips. Frame Size and fps especially. Then set a Sequence to exactly match those settings. It will most likly be DV at 24fps.

Your system should play this back no problem, you just need to get the Sequence settings to exactly match the clips. Also, when you change your Sequence Settings, you need to remove all the clips from the timeline and re-insert them. They will not suddenly change from red to green if they’re in the timeline when you make the change. Not sure why, but they don’t.

Thanks for the help again! Finally figured out the problem. The sequences were set to 29.97 even though my preset in audio/video settings was for 23.98. So I tried changing each individual sequence’s settings. Each time I tried that the sequence disappeared from the timeline and the browser. Talked to a friend who said this happens to him as well. I wondering why this hasn’t been fixed, or at the least substitue “disappear” for the different frame rate options.
Anyway, things seem to be working now with the new sequences. Thanks again!
