How is your external monitor hooked up to FCP? Through the camera?
If so, first ensure that your Audio Video Settings are set to send out audio and video via Firewire. Also ensure that your output settings are correct. That is, if you’re editing HDV, make sure you’re sending an HDV signal back out to the camera. If you’re sending the wrong signal back out to the camera, it most likely would not show an image.
Lastly, ensure that your camera is set up correctly to pass the video through to the monitor.

Is there actual audio on that track? Meaning, you can solo Track 1 and you hear audio?

If you’re running Final Cut Pro 4.5 and you captured a clip of 30 minutes or more, it can take a long time for Final Cut Pro to complete the capture now cycle when you hit ESC. I’ve seen up to 15 minutes.
Also, you’re letting Final Cut Pro run out of timecode which can cause issues. Best way to do this is simply set an In Point and Out Point on the tape. Fast Forward all the way to end and set and Out Point a few seconds before the end of timecode. Then do a Capture Clip.

You can try disabling the Stop on Timecode Break feature and just force it to continue capturing even if it “thinks” it sees a timecode break. This was happening on my 1200A when capturing HD, but all the breaks were phantom. I just turned off the alert.

Go to your Font Book Application and make sure all the fonts you want to use are Enabled. FYI, that’s a very cool application which can enable any font, even while the app you want to use is open.
Short of that, trash your prefs in Final Cut Pro.

VHS, they will start to fall apart.
Everything is fully rendered at high quality before you output to DVD, right?
What settings are you using for the MPEG-2? I generally run at 6 for the minimum bitrate and 7 or 8 for the maximum on my MPEG-2’s.

Just pay close attention to the fact that One Port is DVI and the other is ADC. Kind of annoying actually that a brand new card would feature an ADC slot. Luckily I still have a few in the shop, but since all of Apple’s new displays are DVI, you would think that a new Mac based Graphics card would be dual DVI.
Oh well, the card is fast and snappy with Final Cut Pro 5.0 so far (only been playing for about 2 hours).
