Yep, then FCP stretches the video back out to 1280 on output so your circle will be oval again.
Just take your 1280 graphic and resize the width to 960. Save it, reimport it to FCP and it should be good to go. I’ve actually started doing this. Create the graphic as 720×1280, then “squish” it to 960 and let FCP “unsquish” it.

You can confirm the frame size by opening a clip in Quicktime Movie Player and verifying the frame size there.
i’ve never seen Final Cut Pro “mis-read” a frame size.

Follow the installation instructions. Just insert the CD and tell it to install into FCP.

Why aren’t you capturing to Final Cut Pro? If your footage is 640×480, then you’ll need to edit in a 640×480 timeline.

As your projects get larger, you’ll need more RAM to keep working. Many applications can utilize more and more RAM so they run faster.
I run 4GB RAM in one system and 3GB RAM in the other system. If this is just a hobby for you, you probably don’t need the RAM. If this is your profession and this system is earning you money, then you probably want the RAM. I often have FCP, Photoshop and LiveType / Motion open simultaneously, so the RAM is very helpful.

Drop SCSI and go Fibre Channel. Apple hasn’t supported SCSI for OS X and it’s up to the card / drive manufacturers to make it work. (notice Apple doesn’t sell a SCSI card or SCSI drives?)
I prefer the AJA Kona 2 for a capture card though the Aurora Pipe series is a close second.

Best way to copy a disc is to use Roxio Toast. It’s around $50 and does a fantastic Copy Disk which takes all the files, including hidden files, and builds an exact clone of the original.

23.98 is a lower data rate, thus more streams. For DVCPro HD it’s something like 5mb/sec vs 13mb/sec for 59.94 (29.97)

The test is just a guideline for best case scenario. No Firewire 400 drive can playback 10bit. Some FW800’s can play back 8bit and a few can play back 10bit. Tests are always best case scenarios. Your mileage may vary.
The only way to truly know what your drives can handle is to simply test them on your system. Stack up streams of video, although I think a “streams” test is pretty useless. I’m more concerned with how many transitions, graphics and filters I can stack up.

Anything that starts “Targa” in the Easy Setups or Sequence Settings or Captur Settings is a CineWave codec. Such as something like “Targa YUV 8bit NTSC” or something like that. It’s been over a year since I last ran my CineWave system.
