  • Final Cut locks up at the end of capturing a tape

Posted by Greg Mulvey on June 21, 2005 at 3:28 am

I tried to capture an entire tape and everything works fine until it reaches the end of the tape and the timecode ends. Instead of stopping and creating a clip it locks up and I have to restart. It shows that my clip was captured and is 12gigs, but Final Cut won’t import the clip. If I manually hit the “esc” button before the tape ends it works fine, but I don’t want to have to babysit the capture. I want to just pop my tape in and hit the capture “now” button. Any suggestions?

If you’re running Final Cut Pro 4.5 and you captured a clip of 30 minutes or more, it can take a long time for Final Cut Pro to complete the capture now cycle when you hit ESC. I’ve seen up to 15 minutes.

Also, you’re letting Final Cut Pro run out of timecode which can cause issues. Best way to do this is simply set an In Point and Out Point on the tape. Fast Forward all the way to end and set and Out Point a few seconds before the end of timecode. Then do a Capture Clip.
