ATI X800 XT or another 2GB of RAM
Posted by Steve To on June 20, 2005 at 7:27 pmOK, thanks to all the great posts here, i;ve finally decided to join the work of Mac and FCP Studio.
Getting a Dual 2.7 G5 but can’t decide on whether to go for:
an extra 2GB of RAM (taking me to total of 6GB) or chnaging the existing GFX card to an ATI X800 XT card?
Which will give me the better FCP5 RT performance? Best Compressor MPEG2 encoding speed? Better Motion2 performance?
I can see motion2 would prefer the x800 XT but will FCP and Compressor benefit from extra RAM or the shiny new GFX card upgrade?!
Thanks!
Steve

June 20, 2005 at 8:42 pmThanks Graeme! one thing was to possibly speed up the rendering/performance of your superb film filters (when i get the mac it’ll be one of the first thing i purchase!) 🙂
BTW, what kind of performance can i expect for rendering for a basic film look? I guess RT will be out of the question? Can i get RT preview? Going to be buying a Dual 2.5 G5, 4gb ram, X800….
thanks
Anyone else agree/disagree with Graeme?!

June 20, 2005 at 9:26 pmHi,
If you are planning to get the RAM from Apple just buy the mimimum from Apple then get the additional RAM from Crucial.com. That should save you enough that you can do both.

June 20, 2005 at 9:29 pmOnly thing that helps my filters is a fast and hard drive!! They render at about 5:1 here on a dual 2Ghz, down to 10:1 for a really complex effect. That’s still many times faster than the “competition” though 🙂 The Standards Conversion is 35 times faster than it’s competition…..
You don’t really get much RT, becuase FCP is not built that way with plugins that manipulate time. Some of the plugins in the set will run pretty good though!
And with the X800, get a copy of Doom3 – great fun when you’re not editing.

June 20, 2005 at 10:11 pmThe other place I’ve read to get RAM is from http://www.4allmemory.com. Very cheap prices, but I can’t speak for their service, quality, etc. Also, they only seem to sell PC3200 RAM, not PC4000. Not sure what kind of performance difference this will make though.

June 20, 2005 at 10:15 pmThanks all 🙂
My local reseller (Edinburgh, UK) installs Hynix RAM PC3200, although i may spend the extra 20 pounds per chip to get Kingston RAM – is it worth it? The reseller swears by Hynix tho – lifetime warranty apparently?
Sorted then! 4GB and a shiny X800 XT it is!!
thanks all

Just pay close attention to the fact that One Port is DVI and the other is ADC. Kind of annoying actually that a brand new card would feature an ADC slot. Luckily I still have a few in the shop, but since all of Apple’s new displays are DVI, you would think that a new Mac based Graphics card would be dual DVI.
Oh well, the card is fast and snappy with Final Cut Pro 5.0 so far (only been playing for about 2 hours).
