A few other things to try first..
Object > Expand, then try Unite.
Or, as you suspect, Object > Clipping Mask > Release, then Unite. If you can’t get it to work, consider uploading the file and we’ll fix you up.

Hmmm.
One way to achieve this might be to apply a gradient mesh to your text, and warp it that way.A trick will be achieving the sharp angle at the center.
For that, you might have to outline your type, cut it vertically down the center, then do two warping operations. One for each side.In your version, put some time into making sure your warp accurately follows the contour of the scroll. It looks a little sloppy in the example, and I want you folks to have a nice logo. I don’t know what you folks do, but it sounds important ☺
For the record, I’m at OMAO.Vince

January 14, 2017 at 12:45 am in reply to: Why does the Film and Video template have no background? What you are seeing is the Transparency Grid.
View > Show/Hide Transparency Grid. However, if you hide the transparency grid, you might be under the false impression that your artwork has a background, which it doesn’t.
If you want a background, you have to add it. Otherwise, you will have transparent areas in your art, which might be good for a title roll, for instance. Also look at View > Show/Hide Artboards.
If you have snapping enabled, you can easily create a background with the Rectangle Tool.
Further, if you create a document with the base components that you like, you can add that to your templates folder, thereby making your updated template a template that’s available to illustrator.
Another note, those safe guides were deprecated in 2010 by the National Association of Broadcasters…

So, that might be another reason to create your own template.Vince

Draw the new path with the pen tool, apart from the triangle. Then use the Direct Select tool to move the 2 new points into your desired position.
You can’t actually add a second path from a point. It has to be a separate object.Vince

What is the actual problem, though?
Here are the live characters:
ヒラギノ丸コ – Hiragino MarukoI redrew the text in a Photoshop TIF, in a large size, opened the TIF in Acrobat, the applied OCR. I could then copy the Japanese text characters out of the PDF file, and finally place the Japanese characters into Google Translate ☺
I’ve always used FontDoctor to handle font issues.

December 23, 2016 at 3:15 pm in reply to: Printing in the bottom left of a document in illustratorHmmm. When I worked in a sign shop, I remember that the vinyl guy often talked about nesting and saving material, Editing the artwork, or duplicating the art, so it uses the whole roll width.
Another thing that might be an option. Adding some sort of registration mark to the artwork…
If your art is 3″, and your roll is 12 inches, you could add a small X symbol that’s about 9 inches off to the side art, making your vector the same width of the vinyl.
Just a thought.Vince

December 22, 2016 at 2:14 pm in reply to: Printing in the bottom left of a document in illustratorI’m not sure I understand.
My initial thoughts are:
1) If you want your art to print on a certain portion of a piece of paper, you would set the document to use an artboard at the appropriate size, then position the art accordingly.
2) You can set the center of an artboard by enabling Rulers, then drag the Ruler corner (where the 2 rulers meet), to any point on the artboard, to set the center.I’m not sure either of these options address your issue. Let us know.

December 20, 2016 at 12:02 am in reply to: Importing complex shapes from Photoshop for Envelope distortYou’d need paths in the PSD file. In PS, r-click on the text layer and Create Work Path. Then you should be able to import as expected.
Or you could reset the type in Illustrator, and use the AI file as your base design file.Vince
